God Made Dirt

and dirt don't hurt. And now it's been scientifically proven

From the New York Times

"...indeed, accumulating evidence strongly suggests that eating dirt is good for you.In studies of what is called the hygiene hypothesis, researchers are concluding that organisms like the millions of bacteria, viruses and especially worms that enter the body along with “dirt” spur the development of a healthy immune system.

“What a child is doing when he puts things in his mouth is allowing his immune response to explore his environment, Not only does this allow for ‘practice’ of immune responses, which will be necessary for protection, but it also plays a critical role in teaching the immature immune response what is best ignored.
...

He said that public health measures like cleaning up contaminated water and food have saved the lives of countless children, but they “also eliminated exposure to many organisms that are probably good for us.”

“Children raised in an ultraclean environment,” he added, “are not being exposed to organisms that help them develop appropriate immune regulatory circuits.

.....

In answer to the question, “Are we too clean?” Dr. Elliott said: “Dirtiness comes with a price. But cleanliness comes with a price, too. We’re not proposing a return to the germ-filled environment of the 1850s. But if we properly understand how organisms in the environment protect us, maybe we can give a vaccine or mimic their effects with some innocuous stimulus.”

Dr. Ruebush, the “Why Dirt Is Good” author, does not suggest a return to filth, either. But she correctly points out that bacteria are everywhere: on us, in us and all around us. Most of these micro-organisms cause no problem, and many, like the ones that normally live in the digestive tract and produce life-sustaining nutrients, are essential to good health.

“The typical human probably harbors some 90 trillion microbes,” she wrote. “The very fact that you have so many microbes of so many different kinds is what keeps you healthy most of the time.”
....
Dr. Weinstock goes even further. “Children should be allowed to go barefoot in the dirt, play in the dirt, and not have to wash their hands when they come in to eat,” he said. He and Dr. Elliott pointed out that children who grow up on farms and are frequently exposed to worms and other organisms from farm animals are much less likely to develop allergies and autoimmune diseases."

You see! Cletus isn't just a slack jawed yokel living in stereotypical hillbilly filth- he's just helping to strengthen his 44 kids' immune systems. Take that Park Avenue!

I knew a girl once who had pica and we would randomly find her with a shoe in her mouth...I wonder what happened to her.

Anywhooo, I try to never use antibacterial soap unless I've been doing something really dirty, because I heard a few years back that bacteria can be good for us and I kinda remembered from high school bio about how those little bacterias being exposed to our body enable our body to build resistances to them and thus make your body stronger in the long run, and I'm all about preparing my body for the coming post-apocalyptic wasteland (without actually having to do something too severe and time consuming)

So in conclusion, eat dirt once in a while. Scientist do, however, still recommend you not eat shit. Sorry Divine (r.i.p.)

Who Could Be Sacred of Santy Claus

obviously not this guy

but apparently every small child that's ever lived

and you can see hundreds more here or here; it's an epidemic. I do feel I'll still make my kids meet Santa every year and sit on his lap just so they would cry and I could laugh.I mean what else are kids good for, besides amusement?

Monday Morning Cuteness

I really don't like Mondays, and after the weekend I just endured it's all the worse. Sometime I wish I were an alcoholic so I wouldn't have qualms about drinking when I wake up. I wish someone had taken the time to set me on that path when I was younger

Two things I found wrong about this video: 1- was there nothing else for her to play with? i mean we don't need her to start experimenting with alcohol soo early. Give her another twelve years. Though I guess she'll be an absolute champ in college.
and secondly, Heineken comes in a can? who knew.

And I really don't know why but this video continues to amuse me.I blame little asian babies for being so adorable.

So My Friend Had a Baby Last Night

and sent out a text at 10:42 p.m. (that I read but only half digested in my groggy half asleep state- the hour at which I go to bed each night is pathetic) saying "Ayden Christopher Carnell. 8lbs 6 oz. 19 inches. 8.39 p.m. Our beautiful baby boy! I'm in love in a way I have never known!"

First I'd like to think this is Ayden's first internet mention (so in 15 years if theres still a google he can pull this up in a vanity search).

Secondly it seems like 8 pounds 6 ounces is the... like a lot of babies are that weight- I think i was too, though last night I think I inverted the number and though he was born at 19 pounds.

Three, it's just really weird that one of my friend, at my age (actually like 4 months younger) HAS A BABY! I think having a baby has to be the ultimate life change, screw going through gender transition. I mean I can still be the same person after all this is over, ( except with boobs and minus a certain something) but becoming a mom I think it changes you instantly and permanently in substantial ways. It has too. Also this is the first one of my friends to have a baby so I don't know the protocol- I feel I should buy her something

Four, when I reread that line "I'm in love in a way I have never known" I think I was incredibly happy for her but selfishly I got sad and not sure if it was jealousy, maybe envy, because I don't think I'll ever have that feeling of "love in a way I have never known." That unless major major radical advances in science occur I'll never have a kid with my genes, which is kind of depressing to think about. I mean I plan on (eventually) adopting kids or whatever, but as Human Giants reminds us, and I think it may be true, you can't love your adopted kids as much. I mean intellectually and emotionally maybe but that connection of something coming from within you and because of you I don't think that can ever be approached. I mean do you think that Lily Potter could have saved Harry if he had been adopted?

oh well, at least I'll always have my cats...
(p.s. linda cardellini was once on Kenan and Kel playing a goth girl who had a crush on Kenan, or maybe Kel, and me being bored i recently saw it. some may call that nerdy- i call it research.)

this one really doesn't need any kind of a set up

Ah I love happy babies! Such an infectious laugh. Such a perfect antidote to the gray skies outside (and whatever sickness I've come down with. ugh)

P.S. if today sucks it's probably going to be because I feel like shit and am probably conked on some meds. Well, either that or I suck as a writer and have nothing to say.

Mid-Day Movie Break

It may not be Monday Morning so in theory you should have no cuteness but it is the midday on Wednesday so depending on how you look at it there are only 2 and a half more days of work this week. Or 4 and a half days till you have to start new week's workweek
Yeah that kinda sucks.
Since it is the Hump of the Hump Day here's a video that I saw and couldn't wait till Monday to post. Hopefully it brightens up any gloomy days. I present to you the tragedy and the triumph of Baby Tries To Drink From Water Hose

Let's Be Baby Play Date Arrangers

(or Big Baby, Tiny Baby)

This is totally a love story waiting to happen, btw. I mean seriously "meant to be."*

In Siberia a mother gave birth to her 12th child,a baby girl named Nadia who weighed in at 17 pounds 1 ounce.

aww her little rolly arms are so cute
while in Hanover Germany a baby who was born prematurely after just 21 weeks weighing in at only 10 ounces (that is sooo tiny- my normal bottle of water is twice as big) is finally going home after spending 6 months in the hospital fighting worse than 1000 to 1 odds against her survival

When she finally went home Baby Kimberley weighed only 5 pounds,or less than a third of Nadia- that's insane.

I would love and think it would be the cutest thing ever if like in 15 years they meet at a miracle baby reunion or something and [fall in love] became bffs. It would be adorable. I kind of want them to meet and hang out (y'know the hanging out that babies do, crying and sleeping while being posed by parents in precious positions and outfits) now- I can't wait for adorable pictures of the two of them together. It would be like the time when the world's tallest man met the world's smallest man (with video!), but a thousand times less wrinkly and a million times cuter

*it could happen. Just remember what Paula Abdul said...back when she was still lucid.
(and the original title of this post was Let's Play Baby Matchmaker and it was all about them falling in love but that was when I confused the babies and was reading about this one baby boy who was 10 ounces. [and died, which I didn't notice because I didn't scroll down] But of course we all know girls can't fall in love-that would be ewwy)

Where did this weekend go? Can anyone tell me?
Anyway I probably shouldn't be doing this this morning because all this weekend I was put in charge of playing with babies and my previously dormant maternal instinct kicked in and I really want one, which is bad and so far from what I need right now, but this video is so cute that I had to post:

Ah Lilly, my one and only. She's so darling! I'm sure I'll be nodding off most of today, but I won't be as happy and pleasant when I'm woken up.

Coonie Tunes

Et tu Betty? I mean you have great gams and all but this was kind of shocking. In this cartoon, I'm assuming it's from the 1930s (1935 in fact) Betty Boop is hosting a "stars of the future" talent show with babies as the acts. It's all really cute with lots of awwws, (I really like the russian dancing girl) but you can tell things are going to go bad when she begins to introduce a group called the Colorful Three. I'll let you take a gander yourself, and it is amazing how everything is quite normal and so I'm guessing they put that minute or so in there because it was normal and accepted as well. But c'mon! And then the Native American kid with the incredibly stereotypical "Indian" music, laughing more excitedly when he shoots the white soldiers. wow Betty. Anyway here it is Betty Boop in Making Stars:

Don't even get me started on the skin and lips and the mammy look but Seriously was that cotton in the background? And I don't know how anyone, even then, could think that the watermelon motif and smile wasn't offensive. Damn that was racist. Times change though. Guess it's societal evolution. And Betty if you weren't so fabulous I would totally have to hold this against you, but I guess we can still be friends.Maaybe.

Someone Call New Zealand's Child Protective Services

or whatever the equivalent is there, because this kid is going to be in for a tough time.
In my quest to find the strangest baby name ever we have a very strong contender. A couple in Wellington has named their child Superman. As in the comic book Krypton hero (son of Jor-El.) But as "awesome" and unique as Superman is as a (real life) name, it wasn't the parents first choice. No that honor would go to 4Real, written exactly that way. And what made the couple decide on this moniker to gift their child with?

The Wheatons decided on the name after seeing the baby for the first time in an ultrasound scan and realizing their baby was "for real."...They decided 4Real was the best way to write it, but the name was rejected because the registrar said a name had to be a sequence of characters.

Thankfully there's at least one person with some sense in that country, though sadly the parents will still call the kid 4real, like he was in some late 90's one man boy band. There's no way this kid is having a normal life. The kid is now 2 months old. I'm sure when he's like 7 it'll be really cool that his name is Superman and maybe when he's in his teens and there's some hip hop revival, going by 4real will be "fresh" in his group of friends but imagine he's 25 and trying to advance in some buttoned down business world, imagine that when he's growing up people want to see if they can beat up Superman, or, heaven forbid, when he gets too into the hard core gangsta rap scene in New Zealand that someone wants to see if this Superman can survive bullets. Poor, poor Superman Wheaton. 2007-2026. I just wish his name was Mojo, then at least someone could pray for him.

Poor kid. I hear Daniel's a nice name. You'll need this when you become legal

Monday Morning Cuteness

Well this weekend could have been better, but one good thing that came out of it was discovering this video. Its quite a simple premise; baby eats lemon-hilarity ensues. And according to Buzzfeed (love them!) I'm not the only one who finds babies in pain (not like severe pain) hilarious and really really cute. I found this clip here at the Amateur Gourmet and I couldn't stop laughing for quite awhile (does that make me a bad person?) and plus I had to post it today because of the song (cosmic)

It's still so good;haha. I have a feeling that I'll do this a few times with some of my kids. I am so mature...

Overheard in L.M.E.- The Ultimate Showdown

(an early Saturday afternoon in April)

ev livid e: omg, that is the cutest thing ever!!!
ev livid e: cuter than kittens
ev livid e: way cuter than kittens
a dam e: "you should say i'm gonna kick his butt"

"ooh"
a dam e: best part
ev livid e: ohhhhhhh
ev livid e: ahah
a dam e: and don't hate on kittens
ev livid e: kittens are ugly and dirty
a dam e: babies poop
a dam e: and talk back
ev livid e: babies are natural
a dam e: kittens came before babies
a dam e: evolutionaryily speaking
ev livid e : babies are louder than kittens
a dam e: is that good or bad?
ev livid e: in emergencies, better
a dam e: but when trying to sleep not
ev livid e: but when robbers come in, yes
a dam e: but babies like everyone so they'll just be happy, whereas cats are finicky and elitist and would scratch strangers
ev livid e: babies are friendlier
a dam e: friendly doesn't win wars
ev livid e: pretend friendly does. babies pretend they need attention, then they go in and suckle
a dam e: (haha-you just made me choke a little)
ev livid e: why? because i said suckle?
a dam e: kittens will rub against your leg just so they can get close enough to slice your achilles tendon with their claws
a dam e: cuz i was laughing so hard i started to cough but i was still laughing so i choked
ev livid e: babies will cry in your ear so that they can be burped and then vomit baby juice all over and in your ear
a dam e: a kitten will knife you
ev livid e: a homesick abortion will climb up your leg
a dam e: haahhahaaha
ev livid e: this may quite possibly be the most offensive conversation that i've had on a saturday morning
a dam e: its past 3 in the afternoon
ev livid e: pacific time
a dam e: still past noon

Sunday Confessional; Coming is Going

Just a warning; this post contains WTMI (way too much information)
One of the main reasons I started transition so late (it's all relative I know) was because in all my research over the past ten years I knew that the hormones will, necessarily, make you sterile. I love kids and always have, and always decided that I would be an amazing parent (no matter what gender) and as I have gotten to the age where many of my friends are in long term relationships/ married and having kids, or probably because of the amount of estrogen in my body, I've been thinking about kids and babies a lot. Like incredibly often (as you can probably tell by this blog and the sheer number of babies that are mentioned). I tried looking at storing some "dna" for the future but the costs seemed too high, especially for a college senior with no job prospect and a mountain range of debt, so I decided to take the bullet for the good of me, overall.
At the start of transition that was a huge milestone event for me. Around the end of February I realized that I hadn't masturbated or had an urge to since basically the end of December. A friend (and I use that term quite loosely) who was transitioning as well told me about how she had issues masturbating, so I wanted to see what was up (pun kind of intended) So I did it and it took a lot longer than normal and when I came (hate that word) it had about a tenth of hte volume as normal. My history with orgasming (or cumming, whatever) is kind of weird. The first time it happened I was reading some erotica about a transsexual bride ( I was 14, I think it was called The Replacement Bride or something) and when stuff started coming out I had no idea what was happening ( my dad left when I was 6 and my brother and I don't talk really.) I was a "normal" teenage "boy" and so yada yada, but too many of the times I wish I didn't have to do it, because much of the time it seemed more like a bodily necessity, like going to the restroom than a pleasurable act, and other times I was quite disgusted with the whole thing. I could go for 6 weeks at a time; my sex drive has never been too high.
Time passes. Through very random circumstances I ended up being a top (with two transsexuals, oddly enough) and both times it was quite akward, I didn't want to do it and so I never came close to coming (ugh). More Time passes again and now its late March, I guess. I have very little sex drive, erections have become a foreign word basically and when I did masturbate I guess it had become tantric, because the orgasm was there,but...nothing else was. But I haven't really had any sexual thoughts at all lately so it hasn't been a problem. I had been told/warned that after 6 months a lot of the changes become permanent, sterility being one of them. I'm pretty sure I reached that point a month or two ago, and its not like I can have a sperm count test- I haven't seen any of my own sperm in months. The "boys" have shrunk (thank god- the girls are growing) and so I am the last of my family (besides my brother, and I really don't care about my family name.)
That has been and will probably be one of my only and main regrets. I've always wanted kids, for kind of selfish and arrogant reasons. I always wanted to see what my genes would produce, and how amazing they could be with my nurturing. At times I thought that was just kind of a masculine trait but I still can't shake it. And I know adoption is out there, and there are a ton of kids who need homes, but I wonder if I would be able to love them the same, or would I always be embittered that they are not my blood, or whatever. Plus I have no idea what kind of state or agency allows "people like me", to adopt. I thought I was used to being a marginalized member of society, I am black, but not being able to adopt will really piss me off. And this is one thing I have not told my mom. One of the only things she gets upset about, or sometimes when she's frustrated , is how she wants me to get married (to a woman I suppose) and have some grandkids and I have no idea how to tell her that I can't. (And I think I may have come out before my brother, who is gay, so this may put pressure on him to have some kid so my mom can have a genetic grandkid- she deserves one) The only thing that gives me some hope is that growing up she would always be quite upset and disappointed about kids not being adopted, and always used to talk about being a foster parent, so I may be able to cast it as a noble act. Plus as Ev always tells me "count on stem cells" and cloning could be sweet. But it still hurts and feels inadequate, like what if I am in Hubby and we actually get married, yada yada- I would love to see what our kids would look like. Too much of the time I feel like John Lithgow's character in The World According to Garp.
But since I can't have kids of my own, and they're going to look nothing like me anyway I may do the Jolie thing and try to start my own League of Nations. Then I can always claim it was part of a greater and more noble scheme. I guess giving up a future beyond me is a worthy trade for loving the life I am living in this time; I'm far more happy than sad and as for the future que sera, sera. And all that jazz. ::sigh::

My Baby Names

One of the new "buzzes" on Buzzfeed.com is about weird baby names. So that got me thinking. I always like interesting or different names( a friend is having a boy named Ayden which I like), because there can only be so many Matthews, or whatevers, but some time parents go over board. It can be hard enough being a kid, but some are tanatamount to child abuse. Like Nosmo King (named after a No Smoking sign) or Majestic Mapps. And of course all the weird celebrity baby names that we all know and some love. A few are cute while a lot just go overboard, like all of them on that vh1 special.

I, like a lot of people, have thought about what to name my kids (unlike so many of the parents of the above) and when I have my kids* (I mean adopt them ::sigh::) I've picked out pretty sweet names. Here goes
for my first girl Arden
for my first boy Brando (is there a more masculine or badass a name?)[and Ev I declared it pubicly first, so I win)
Cameron, and finally
Duke

They're unique enough so they'll feel special, and cool enough to be admired when they're older, but not just weird. I think they'll like 'em.

*no time before I'm 32
