Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

*but I still want.
Shocking as it may seem to be, it is a little thin out there this week (of course I'm being a lazy tramp as well so there's probably a millon cool things right... around... that... corner,

  • "This stylish Christmas tree is made of plywood designed by Buro North, Australian graphic designer. According to the designer, this Christmas tree is 80% more environmentally friendly than a traditional spruce and you can use it year after year" Its fun for the whole family! until they realize that there's nothing actually underneath the cool eco friendly puzzle tree.
  • Really enjoy your Segway but feeling a bit "over it" now that the teeming masses have embraced it? Looking for a more vertical lift in your life? Felling a bit of a twat, bumming around the ground? Well have I (not me personally but this company does though) ahe the product for you. The Vertipod is a" flying machine [that] employs a gasoline or ethanol powered 440-cubic-centimeter engine to propel one brave along individual at speeds up to 40 miles per hour while hovering 15 feet off the ground, with a propeller, naturally, spinning perilously close to your feet. What's more, Air Buoyant's Pete Bitar says the contraption could even have consumer appeal, with a $10,000 kit planned that "can be assembled in a weekend." Now you know what to get for your friend who has everything. Well, that or maybe a conscience and awareness of the larger problems in the world. La di da...
  • Frolicking through Fashion land
    • Marimekko, a company I had never heard of until I saw this and recognized their style as being like my mom's in the 70s and thus retro comeback worthy, and H&M, which I do know and love, are collaborating on a collection to be available in April. That is really kind of exciting news-I can pull off that look soo well (if I say so myself.) Who knew the Finns could be so funky?
    • I'm not sure if this bag shaped like a Fender Stratocaster is the coolest thing or just incredibly cheesy. (and without a neck I wonder what sounds would come out of that thing). It is interesting though (I'd probably carry a recorder inside me, y'know, to throw people off.)
    • To be honest though, this item is probably more my speed. From Dutch designer Fab (short for Fabrick. Or not.) comes handmade, trendy laptop-bags in various shapes and colors. And "Fab" can add a few matching belts, purses and wallets to it. I didn't realize how much of a nerd I was (though this blog should have been my first indication as to the extent of my illness) until this moment when I recognized how truly excited I got over a bag for my laptop. Sad really.
    • Ok I take back some of my previous statement because this Patent Bean Clutch from JALDA is much much more exciting.
    • The Ballerina Pump by Nina Ricci
    • From Giuseppe Zanotti, Patent T-Strap Cage Stillettos
    • These aren't shoes but they are for the foot region so I'll allow it. Flip Flop Socks! which are a great idea but if it were to ever be cold enough where I'd need to wear socks with my flip flops*, I'd probably just find a real pair of shoes. (*it's never cold enough to wear flip flops)
    • From Doo. Ri comes a "Runway Jersey Dress with Organza Hem". Those really sultry gloves, unfortunately not included.
    • Leather Jacket by oli.
    • Class it up while clubbing with your own blinker the star; a FireJewel Necklace.
    • And finally, this absolutely stunning diamond necklace by irina blok though I think my personal fav has to be the lavishly beautiful diamond and oval aquamarine pendant set in 14k white gold. It is lavishly beautiful especially when all is said and done.

Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

*but of course I still want

  • Stuff for the Dream House
    • The Sorapot is such a beautiful new twist on the teapot; it looks so frickin cool and unlike anything else. It actually looks like the future and I want one- I'd even gladly give up any kettle whistling (though I refuse to acknowledge that I can become a "friend" of it on Facebook)
    • "The By Appointment chairs from Moritz Waldemeyer change color to match your outfit... An aura is projected around each chair to match the color of the fabric you’re wearing" Once again, so trippy. Does it do stripes? (cuz neither do I)
  • A Bit of Miscellania
  • Fashion! (or something like it)
    • Now I'm nowhere close to even thinking about getting married (and if I were I would want a much more unique wedding dress) but this is a kind of cool idea for my bridesmaids. "Twobirds is a boutique bridesmaid dress company that designed one dress that can be worn in ten different ways."
    • From Pianegonda a Lovesick Heart Ring
    • "The Panty Pops" by Victoria's Secret "are brightly colored and pattered ladies undies that come packaged like lollipops. Panty Candy is a line of thongs made of equally vibrant fabric packaged as “bon-bons.” They also have a Camy and Panty Cone, a gift set for the holidays that includes a tank top and matching undies wrapped in a big ice-cream box." Seems like a perfect opportunity for getting into a sticky situation...
    • A Pair of Patent Shoe Boots
    • A Taffeta strapless dress by Miu Miu
    • RM's Moon dress
    • From Burberry comes a Military Cape Jacket
    • And finally Hautelook.com is "a new members-only site whose clients get exclusive access to 48-hour online private sales." I think it could be amazing (and is getting a lot of in the know buzz) Registration is free and if you do sign up if you tell them that jacqui.dey@gmail.com sent you I'd love you all for ever and longer

Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

* but of course I still want.
I'm lazy and tired so this may be in even more boring of list form than normal.

  • The things I require for this site- Locatetv.com and Miro 1.o both seem like really cool and soon to be indispensable video search engines that will allow me to provide you with 45% of the random content on this site.
  • Apparently arm warmers are a new big thing and I have to say I already have a pair and I don't know if they look dorky or stylish but, especially now I've grown quite attached to them. I'm wearing them right now and it's not even that cold in here. My forearms really feel bare without them.
  • No I don't need a Soundbug by FeONIC allows you to listen to music without speakers or headphones. It attaches to any hard, smooth surface such as tables or windows and uses these surfaces to amplify the music" but it might just enhance the quality of life and isn't that important as well. I think it would fit well with my Sound Asleep Pillow, a pillow with a speaker buried inside and music only audible to the napper.
  • I've only rarely been accused of not being lazy and so while I don't know exactly or how well "press on makeup" would look or work I think I could give it a try and would save me a lot of screwing up when I decide to get ready after a few glasses.
  • There's a book out called "Why Mommy is a Democrat" and it is one of the few reasons I would want a kid right now. So I could begin the indoctrination immediately ( though I'd fear that he or she would rebel and become a evangelical Republican.)
  • Wine in a Pant Can (from Paradocx) + a Helium Balloon Light + the Hercules 400 laser pointer " powerful enough to melt through plastic, light fireworks, pop balloons and be seen from miles away splitting the night sky"= either a horrible accident waiting to happen or an amazing way to pass the time
  • Speaking of things that seem like amazing ways to pass the time that can lead to horrible accidents, we have the Huski that "utilizes a pen-sized plastic cooling cell that is placed in a dock. The dock is filled with pressurized liquid CO2, which expands to create dry ice in the cooling cell. The cell is then dropped into a beer bottle and, voila, you have yourself a frosty beverage" which I don't think would be a great thing for chugging. And the Twist n Shot shot glasses that seems perfect for jello shots- my friend Mara would love this.
  • I have an irrational fear of robots and of their eventual takeover of the world but this RoboPanda I mean is sooo adorable I can't wait to give it a hug and probably wouldn't notice or care as it shackles me. I mean, panda!
  • Ok let's do fashion (and no matter how much Project Runway I watch I still feel like a horrible amateur/poseur
and finally my friend Brandi is in a movie, Mandie and the Secret Tunnel. She's the "other"black girl that that the cat hisses out (Liza). Which means you should see it.

Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

but of course I still want

  • Let's start off with things for the dream house
    • The Alpha Liege Lounge Chair, a chair you control with your own breath seems like it would be quite the relaxing element in a room. Apparently the chair "lets you enjoy soft vibrations that are accompanied by celestial sounds as well as the gentle rocking motion that synchronizes with the rhythm of your breath.Your body is taken to a place of deep relaxation, where you float between falling asleep and awakening. The ensemble of sound vibration, movement, light and warmth melts away tension and heightens the senses. That really does sound so heavenly.
    • Multipurpose furniture seems to be the new hotness and for someone of limited means and space it seems perfect. Though multipurpose furniture has been around for a bit- I know I use my bed for sleep and as a desk, among other things.
    • Speaking of space saving cuteness, Jonas Samson has come up with light emitting wallpaper so you don't need to take up space with a silly lamp, though silly lamps could be quite unique and necessary just for conversations sake, or at least their images, because of the Flat Life art work by Finn Magee which is a painting of a lamp that can actually be used as a light (or one of a clock that tells the time.) It's amazing, but is it still art if it serves a purpose?
    • Alexander Rieh has come up with a simple decorating idea that is sure to be innocuous enough for everyone, but will also give an in the know laugh to those who figure it out.You just "take a couple of juice glasses and colored condoms, unroll them over the glasses, cut away the tip, stick the flower in" and there you have it- the Naughty DeFlower Vase (oh I do love wordplay!) Such a good idea, especially for us wanna-be "women of loose virtue" who have a few of them lying around. I mean they do expire, don't they?
    • and what completes a room better than a $66,000 bed made of "the world’s most rare and precious wood... Agalwood [which] is also known as “a fossil wood” which gives off a pleasing fragrance as it grows older. Experts say the wood that made this bed came from a tree that was probably 1000 years old and grew in Indonesia". I wonder if it's creaky though-that would get annoying.
  • I'm not sure what exactly any of this means: the G.41 PMP which features a 4.3-inch screen, WiFi, MP3, WMA, MPEG4 and Ogg support, an integrated digital camera, voice recorder, FM radio, and what looks like a well-polished UI. Also worth noting is the G.71 media streamer / DVR, available in DVD or Blu-ray versions, which features a removable hard drive and external storage support, dual DVB-T tuners, IPTV support, Ethernet, WiFi, HDMI-out, and DivX / DivX HD / XviD, H.264 and MPEG2 support. Rounding out the highlights is the C.40 VoIP phone, which'll let you Skype it up over WiFi, besides the fact the author seemed quite excited about it, so I'll take one.
  • And Mac is finally releasing OS X, Leopard on the 26th and it looks gorgeous. I think too gorgeous for my little powerbook here, but I could never abandon her (until he goes crazy and ruins my life of course)
  • I'm not sure how often you could wear this Persona mask but it looks amazing aaand Halloween is coming up and this would be a unique piece to show off.
  • Gary Harvey debuted this collection of gowns made of recycled clothing designs include "using 18 Burberry macs, a fishtail corset dress using 28 camouflage Army jackets, and a body-contouring gown using discarded baseball jackets." I think my favorite of the ones I've seen is the denim dress, though they're all amazing.
  • Speaking of recycled at this site you can see the amazing transformation of regular plastic bags into really cute handbags and totes. I'm really impressed and it is really Beauty from Junk.
  • Here's a bra that has "2,500 diamonds with a 5.4 carat sapphire in the center." And is thought to be worth about $1.3 million I guess I wouldn't be able to just throw that in the washer when I'm lazy though it would be cool to own the most expensive bra. Wait? What? Victoria's Secret is offering a "gift set of bra, thong, garter, cuff bracelet and matching barrette... decorated with $4.5 million worth of diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and yellow sapphires on a push up bra" Of course I would look nowhere as near as those models. Grrr.
  • This could be the most mischevious thing ever. It's an umbrella that "harnesses the flow of rainwater down into its handle, a water pistol. The user can fire at will, maintaining a constant flow of water as long as rain continues to fall" Omg that sounds like soo much fun
  • Okay let's do fashion desires:
    • A Bella Coat
    • From Second Clothing comes Yoga Jeans that are comfortable enough to be worn while doing yoga but presentable enough for places outside of the gym. I think these would be perfect for flying or long road trips.
    • Fun Jewelry
      • by Anneke Jacobs, the Argusring, which is almost kalediscopic
      • This cascading bracelet which doesn't seem all that practical and I have no idea what I would wear it with but I still feel I need it for a yet to be determined occasion. You never know...
      • A Candy Pyramid Ring
      • From Hayley Mei quite a few cute little necklaces. I think my favorite is still the "It Lives To Kill"
      • This ring is definitely unique. It is a ring with sliding diamonds, by Yael Herman. (sorry for that first grade flashback, sentence wise) I think that would cross like 3 total fingers, which is bad, but would also prevent me from flipping my middle finger, which is good.
      • The only problem I see with these Little Big Statement necklaces (with charms that say Yes, Ok, or No) is what if you change your mind over the course of the day from No to Yes, or viceversa. And if you wear them all at the same time are you labeled indecisive and fickle? I've been called far worse.
      • It's like a grown up and new age mood ring: "Skintile, an electric jewelry, is partly affected by the mood of the wearer" So what would be the effect for slightly bored but hanging out for a little bit longer just in case anything cool happens?
    • Dresses
    • A few shoes
      • These would be perfect for a night out clubbing, from Theory the Betty Mirror Leather "High-rise pump in gleaming steel colored metallic patent leather." I just hope it's not too reflective- I only like certain people looking up my skirt.
      • By Solea the Sooty slingback (I just wish it came in another color)
    • Cute Bags
      • a Grey Canvas Tote Bag that is "roomy enough for all of your essentials--be it a laptop and camera or a change of clothes and heels. Each is lightweight, durable and comes in a fun range of colors. Plus, the wide handles are detachable so that you can mix and match to suit your every whim."
      • From Issey Miyake a Silver Space Tote-Bilbao bag.

Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

* but of course I still want.
According to Boinkology there are 5 sexy fashion essentials: Go-Go Boots, Boyshorts, Wifebeaters, Knee Socks and Hoodies. I'm not sure I agree with them but of course fashion is about far more than strictly essentials (and no I don't know a thing about fashion but I still like to play along)

  • Blackhawk! has a Warrior Wear Series where the shirts and pants have built in tourniquetshat are correctly positioned to minimize blood loss." Good for if, y'know you get into any firefights on your daily commute.
  • Fashion Scientists/Artists/Designers at the School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University have developed a Beat Dress that contains 100 LED lights that pulse according to the rhythm of music. That sounds spectacular for a night of clubbing or raving (are there still raves? that seems so mid 90s), though I hope they can make it actually have a shape instead of looking like the gelatinous body of a jellyfish. I wonder if it could hold up to certain music though (see Autechre or Moby's Thousand)
  • Which you could play on the Rolly the new dancing mp3 player with party lights. So cute and so fun from Sony.
  • Of course doing so much dancing can be exhausting which is where the Self-Sustainable Chair-dress comes into play. (God i love versatile garments.) It's inflatable, made of 7 trash bags, 2 foot pumps and a pair of slippers. "The chair is slowly deflated under the weight of the wearer, motivating him or her to consistently switch between walking and sitting as a loop behavior on the street. The balance between exercise and rest would be maintained by wearing this suit. The purpose of this project is to transform the humdrum experiences produced by routine walking commutes into an amusing interactive performance." Indeed.
  • I don't know about wearing a dress made entirely of condoms. I would think any girl that was wearing that was either incredibly out there, hip and free, or a whore. I would love love love to see someone wear it to a big awards show though.
  • Continuing with the inflatable theme, I know some have harped on me that I can't get past my college days (see comments on the Hollywood is Doomed past from last week) yada yada but I know I wish someone would have told me about a wearable full body sleeping bag back when I was out in K-Ville freezing but too much of an alcoholic to stay in the tent. Future Dukies take note; this could serve you well.
  • Speaking of versatile use items, remember how excited I got last week about the picnic cloth dress? Well this is even better: Demelza Hill has a bag that converts into a rug, for all of those picnics on the run. And it's actually stylish unlike that dress from last week. I seriously want one as well as a desire to go on picnics.
  • Here are some other less functional but cuter bags that I also want: this mid-sized Lily Purse which looks so sophisticated like Audrey Hepburn elegant (and it's on sale!), this one would be more for Mara: I'm sure she would love a dachsund shaped bag or other Poochie shaped bags from Fuzzy Nation (I would rather get a plush toy made from a picture of my cat personally) and then there is this gorgeous yet kind of funky Fendi bag; if anyone wants to give me $1300 for a totally frivolous purchase I would not be opposed.
  • At first I thought these "Save 2nd Base" shirts were a humorous plea to save foreplay, but they are actually shirts whose proceeds go to, I believe Breast Cancer research. I guess that's a much better meaning.
  • Speaking of really cute gestures this is so so romantic. They are "2 of a Kind" engagement rings from Modern Poverty where when you break them apart an engagement with the other will exist. So sweet. I really want one ( though I guess I should work on getting a boy first.)
  • The boy will no doubt be drawn to me if I dress in something from Ulla Johnson who's clothes look so wearable and understated, yet fashionable, even if her models look like 16 year old heroin addicts from the Eastern Bloc who've just woken up. A boy who could afford The Fetish would be greatly appreciated. The car, it cost $612,225 but it's electric; think what you'll save on gas!
  • Though to be honest I would be quite happy with the Chevy E-Flex concept car. Not only is it a hybrid but on the back of the car you can find two segways. That's so sensible yet futuristic! I mean I don't know what I would do without my segway. I don't remember how we managed before:

In The Know: Do You Remember Life Before The Segway?

More (Unexpected) Material Lust

I really really really want an iPod touch. It's like the iPhone but without that pesky phone and 2 year service contract.
It's so pretty with wi-fi and in 8 and 16 gigs :

God I'm such a sucker for shiny. Check it out here. And here's the press release with all the technical stuff that I don't understand and really don't care about, but if you do knock yourself out. {UPDATED: and apparently there are new "iPod classics" that come in 80 or 160 GB. it can hold 40,000 songs. wow; i can now hold my entire library. and more. I don't know if this was good knowledge to acquire. Goodbye wallet and social interaction.}
