Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

*but I'm very interested to try

  • Before we start perhaps we should prepare our bodies with a "pretox drink." From Alibi Drinks, Pretox is "the opposite of a DETOX product. It’s a drink that prepares your body to receive and process the toxins you are exposed to on a daily basis, rather than with a detox product which typically only starts to work once the toxins are already in your system." And apparently it mixes well,er as well
  • Sparkling Rose has been called the ultimate girly drink, and with glittering pink sparkles it seems like it definitely would be. and it's less than 20 bucks."Pink by Yellowglen is a delicious sparkling blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from South Eastern Australia. It displays strawberry aromas and refreshing fruit flavors of sweet berry & lime. Or put simply, yum." I'm really intrigued.
  • Almost as intrigued as I am by Paris' Rich Prosecco, champagne in a can. That's hot.
  • Of course no amount of Paris Hilton or champagne can make Rich Prosecco (not really crazy about that name) as classy as say:
    • Dos Lunas Extra Anejo tequila "is bottled in hand-blown Baccarat decanters and aged for 10 years in Spanish sherry oak casks. It comes with undeniably beautiful crystal stoppers as well as a sterling silver necklace and key." for $2,500. I have a checkered history with tequila but the way they describe it "In many ways Grand Reserve is closer to the finest single malts and cognacs than to other tequilas. We set out to create the world’s best tequila and that goal informed every decision that was made, from growth through production to packaging.” The result is an Extra Añejo of remarkable complexity, unparalleled smoothness and luxurious presentation – a tequila that sets a new standard for the category" I'd feel I'd love it so much before I was on my knees in the bathroom.
    • A $71,000 "Flawless" cocktail only available at Movida's in London "It’s officially the world’s most expensive Christmas cocktail ...Ingredients in the costly cocktail include a large measure of Louis XII cognac, half a bottle of Cristal Rose champagne, some brown sugar, angostura bitters and a few flakes of 24-carat edible gold leaf, But the real extravagance is an 11-carat white diamond ring - which can be found at the bottom of the glass. And customers buying the exorbitant cocktail won’t go unnoticed. Two security guards will be on watch as the drink is prepared and watch over the client’s table until the last sip. Or
    • "This Beauté du Siècle treasure chest containing a 100-year-old Hennessy cognac available in Russia for $200,000."
  • at times looking at prices like that I always remember that though I can't afford those things I really don't need them, probably wouldn't appreciate them and there are children starving in Mississippi. Puts things in perspective, y'know?

Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

*but I'd like to try

  • Sam Adams has come out with what is being called "the world's most expensive beer" and at $5 an ounce it is definitely not cheap. "Samuel Adams Utopias retails for $120 per 24 oz. bottle. It’s not only expensive, it’s... strong. This year’s vintage dated has 27 percent alcohol, about 5 times normal.“The copper-colored liquid inside hasn’t a bubble of carbonation,” the Sun Sentinel reviewed. “The first sensations are a viscous mouth feel and a sweet sherrylike flavor with nuances of toffee and maple. There are notes of vanilla and plum and a hint of charred wood. A long, lingering alcohol burn, more reminiscent of a cognac or brandy than a beer, is followed by a sweet burned-caramel aftertaste" Seriously a fine beer is almost as wonderful as a fine wine. And that taste combination sounds exquisite.
  • Something that doesn't sound delicious is the Calimocho, a drink that was recently profiled in the New York Times. The original mix was half coke half red wine and apparently people love it. "The drink was supposedly created — or at least named — at a festival in Algorta, Spain, in 1972, when some young entrepreneurs discovered that the wine they had planned to sell tasted not just bad but toxic, and added Coca-Cola-and ice to mask the flavor. It was an improbable hit." I'm still a little skeptical but you never know. Here's the recipe featured in that same article:

    1ounce Coca-Cola

2 ounces Rhum Clement V.S.O.P. rum

2 ounces rioja or other dry red wine.

Combine the ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice, and serve.

  • And in my Calimocho I think I would, from now on, have to use "Premium Cola" that is reportedly not actually a company but rather a state of mind "Premium-Cola is not a company, since profit is not a goal of the collective. There is no office, no salaries and no actual boss. All members of the collective make a living by other jobs and build up Premium-Cola as sort of a hobby. All issues are decided on collectively, there is hardly any advertising - instead, art pictures are printed on the inside of the bottles' labels.

The collective puts much thought into "proper" brand leading and acting within the economy, instead of expanding. Premium-Cola is being sold in selected outlets (not only Clubs and Bars) only, whose philosophy must be similar to that of the brand. Overall, Premium-Cola can be considered a brand philosophy project rather than a company." I really like the sleek minimalism of the bottle (though it wouldn't work well for kids looking to cheat on a test in a rather intense and ingenious manner.)

  • Finally, after almost a century, an American made absinthe is on the market. I've only had absinthe a few times, in Europe and freshmen year with a friend in the dorms, and I never "tripped" though I did get really fucking drunk, but I'm just really happy that I won't have to go through so much work to get it so I can try to dance with la Fée Verte from now on. (And oh how I do really love the European sophistication of preparing it.Makes me feel artistic and tragic.) Well done, St. George Absinthe Verte- you make me proud to be an American. (hmm, I wonder how to go about touring the plant in Alameda)

Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

* but that I'd still like to try

  • A new hip thing is for twenty somethings to go out and watch science experiments while drinking the night away, or that's what I got from this article in the New York Times. it's like Mr. Science meets Captain Morgan. I think I want in.
  • Surprise in a Can- 'These bizarre beverages aptly titled 'Anything' and 'Whatever' because that is precisely what you get. All the labels from Singapore marketing company, Out of the Box, look the same, but the content is a surprise each time." It's always better when it's a surprise. I just hope there are no gag flavors- that would not be ok.
  • The L.A. Times recently had an article about the "New Rules of Cocktail". Here are the recipes featured in the article. All are way more sophisticated than my normal selections.
    • The Martinez
      1 1/2 ounces Beefeater gin
1 1/2 ounces Carpano Antica vermouth
      1/4 ounce Luxardo maraschino liqueur
2 dashes Fee Bros. orange bitters
      Orange for garnish

      1. Add the gin, Carpano Antica, maraschino liqueur and orange bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir and strain into a chilled coupe.
      2. To make an orange twist, use a channel or paring knife to cut a thin strip of orange peel 2 to 3 inches long. Twist the peel into a "spring" shape over the finished drink to release the oils and drop the twist into the drink.
    • Vieux Mot
      1 1/2 ounces Plymouth gin
      1/2 ounce St-Germain elderflower liqueur
      1/4 ounce (1 1/2 teaspoons) simple syrup
3/4 ounce (1 1/2 tablespoons) fresh lemon juice

Pour the gin, elderflower liqueur, simple syrup and lemon juice into a shaker filled with ice. Shake, then strain into a chilled coupe.
    • Horseradish and Pomegranate Margarita

      1 1/2 ounces horseradish-infused tequila
      1/4 ounce Cointreau
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
      1/4 ounce simple syrup
1/2 ounce pomegranate juice (freshly squeezed or POM Wonderful)

Pour the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup and pomegranate juice into a shaker. Shake. Pour into a glass with ice. Add a lime wedge for garnish.

  • Along that same path the New York Times had a piece entitled Cracking the Code of the Zombie about a man who " sees his mission as elevating the lowly reputation of umbrella drinks to their rightful standing." Here are some tiki recipes from that article
    • Zombie Punch
      3/4 ounce lime juice
1/2 ounce white grapefruit juice1/4 ounce cinnamon syrup (see note)
      1/2 ounce falernum (see note)
1 1/2 ounces dark Jamaican rum, such as Appleton Estate V/X
1 1/2 ounces gold rum, such as Cruzan 5-year-old
1 ounce 151-proof Lemon Hart Demerara rum
      Dash Angostura bitters
6 drops ( 1/8 teaspoon) Herbsaint or Pernod
      1 teaspoon grenadine
      3/4 cup crushed ice.

Put everything into a blender. Blend at high speed for 5 seconds. Pour into a highball glass and add ice cubes to fill. Decorate with sliced fruit or berries and a mint sprig.

    • Beachbum Berry’s Zombie
      3/4 ounce lime juice
      1 ounce white grapefruit juice
1/2 ounce cinnamon-infused sugar syrup (see note)
      1/2 ounce Bacardi 151 rum
      1 ounce dark Jamaican rum
Sliced fruit and mint for garnish.

Shake all ingredients well with ice cubes. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with fruit and a mint sprig.

    • Beachbum’s Own
      3/4 ounce lemon juice
      3/4 ounce pineapple juice
      3/4 ounce orange juice
3/4 ounce passion fruit syrup (see note)
3/4 ounce Cuarenta Y Tres liqueur (Licor 43)
1 1/4 ounces smoky, medium-bodied rum such as Lemon Hart Demerara, El Dorado, Pampero or Mount Gay Extra Old
1 1/2 ounces light rum, such as Cruzan 2-year-old.

Pour all ingredients into a shaker with plenty of ice and shake well. Pour, ice and all, into a double old-fashioned glass.

    • Plantation Daze
      1 ounce Cognac
      1 ounce Galliano
      1/2 ounce lemon juice.

Pour all ingredients into a shaker with plenty of ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass.

    • Hot Coffee Grog
1 sugar cube or 1 heaping teaspoon sugar
      1 teaspoon honey
      1 teaspoon unsalted butter
      Pinch of grated nutmeg
      Pinch of ground clove
      Pinch of powdered cinnamon
3 strips orange peel, about 1/2-inch wide
1 strip grapefruit peel, about 1/2-inch wide
      6 ounces steaming hot coffee
1 ounce dark Jamaican rum, such as Appleton Estate V/X
      2 drops vanilla extract

Cinnamon stick. Place all ingredients in a heatproof glass or mug and stir until butter melts and sugar dissolves.

  • The San Francisco Chronicle (awhile back) had an article on Resurrecting Spirits about a growing trend of trying to make historically accurate cocktail. A pair recipes from it
    • Atty Cocktail
3/4 ounce Noilly Prat dry vermouth
1 1/2 ounces gin (Boodles, Aviation or Beefeater recommended)
1 teaspoon Rothman & Winter creme de violette
      1 teaspoon spoon Lucid absinthe
      Lemon twist
Instructions: In a mixing glass 2/3 full of ice, add the vermouth, gin, creme de violette and absinthe. Stir well and then strain into cocktail glass. Squeeze a lemon twist on top and drop it into the drink.

    • Swedish Punsch
      1 1/2 ounce Batavia Arrack
      1 ounce Demerara rum
      1 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounces Martinique syrup (or substitute 3 parts good raw sugar to 1 part water)
About four strokes freshly grated nutmeg
      1 1/2 ounces Champagne
Instructions: Combine the Batavia Arrack, Demerara rum, lemon juice, Martinique syrup and nutmeg in a cocktail shaker. Shake well and pour into into a sherry glass and top with Champagne.

Material Lust: Things that are too cool/trendy for me*

* but of course I still want.
I'm lazy and tired so this may be in even more boring of list form than normal.

  • The things I require for this site- Locatetv.com and Miro 1.o both seem like really cool and soon to be indispensable video search engines that will allow me to provide you with 45% of the random content on this site.
  • Apparently arm warmers are a new big thing and I have to say I already have a pair and I don't know if they look dorky or stylish but, especially now I've grown quite attached to them. I'm wearing them right now and it's not even that cold in here. My forearms really feel bare without them.
  • No I don't need a Soundbug by FeONIC allows you to listen to music without speakers or headphones. It attaches to any hard, smooth surface such as tables or windows and uses these surfaces to amplify the music" but it might just enhance the quality of life and isn't that important as well. I think it would fit well with my Sound Asleep Pillow, a pillow with a speaker buried inside and music only audible to the napper.
  • I've only rarely been accused of not being lazy and so while I don't know exactly or how well "press on makeup" would look or work I think I could give it a try and would save me a lot of screwing up when I decide to get ready after a few glasses.
  • There's a book out called "Why Mommy is a Democrat" and it is one of the few reasons I would want a kid right now. So I could begin the indoctrination immediately ( though I'd fear that he or she would rebel and become a evangelical Republican.)
  • Wine in a Pant Can (from Paradocx) + a Helium Balloon Light + the Hercules 400 laser pointer " powerful enough to melt through plastic, light fireworks, pop balloons and be seen from miles away splitting the night sky"= either a horrible accident waiting to happen or an amazing way to pass the time
  • Speaking of things that seem like amazing ways to pass the time that can lead to horrible accidents, we have the Huski that "utilizes a pen-sized plastic cooling cell that is placed in a dock. The dock is filled with pressurized liquid CO2, which expands to create dry ice in the cooling cell. The cell is then dropped into a beer bottle and, voila, you have yourself a frosty beverage" which I don't think would be a great thing for chugging. And the Twist n Shot shot glasses that seems perfect for jello shots- my friend Mara would love this.
  • I have an irrational fear of robots and of their eventual takeover of the world but this RoboPanda I mean is sooo adorable I can't wait to give it a hug and probably wouldn't notice or care as it shackles me. I mean, panda!
  • Ok let's do fashion (and no matter how much Project Runway I watch I still feel like a horrible amateur/poseur
and finally my friend Brandi is in a movie, Mandie and the Secret Tunnel. She's the "other"black girl that that the cat hisses out (Liza). Which means you should see it.

My Friday Post

or Making Up For Lost Time.

I had to fix my computer this weekend, which was why, as you may have noticed Friday was bare. So this is the post where I try to condense all of my Friday "regular" features into one post. Andiamo

Coonie Tunes

Wow that was racist

Liquid Fantasies:

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 2 oz lemon juice
  • 2 oz cranberry juice
  • Fill a highball glass with ice, add the vodka, lemon juice and cran. Garnish with a lemon wedge and serve.

Drink Of The Week-

The Three Day Weekend
1 part Jagermeister® herbal liqueur
1 part Malibu® coconut rum
1 part pineapple juice
1 part grenadine syrup

Fill a hurricane glass with plenty of ice. Add Jägermeister and rum first. Top off with pineapple juice and grenadine. Shake well.

And I would have had a post asking how Viva Laughlin ever got on the air, and also wondering what would be the next predictable celebrity arrest- Kid Rock at a Shoney's? (close) [just kidding]
before ending the day with an upbeat danceable Stuck in My Head Song of the day

Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

but I still think I want to try

  • Those wacky Germans have come up with (what I assume is a dark colored) energy drink named...wait for it..the Black Bastard. I would hope this comes to the States though I doubt it, but I would love to be able to go someplace and order a Black Bastard, besides an orphanage that is. (zing)
  • Another energy drink of sorts, the Tantra erotic "lifestyle drink" that amongst other things claims that it "stimulates and excites you always and restores used-up energy. It increases physical performance and mental alertness and reduces stress recovery periods...stimulates metabolism, blood circulation and the nervous system...It is perfect for all kinds of parties, events, discos, nightclubs, or just with your partner. Tantra erotic is registered worldwide and is the only effective erotic energizer.TANTRA" has been the symbol for sexual attraction for more than 2000 years. The secret mix containing natural GINSENG and the asian fruit SHIZANDRA, afrotises and causes the tantric feeling. TANTRA fits well with the attitude of the "party-people". The color of TANTRA erotic liquid is like gold and the taste ideal to mix cocktails and long drinks with" In other words if I really need a boost to stay up late to study I should probably stick with Red Bull. But if you're one of those "party-people" (whores) then I guess this would be perfect. It's made with real sugar and not high fructose corn syrup so at least it's healthy!
  • Though if I were really trying to stay health I may have to lean towards trying Cucumber Water. Apparently "ice cold water infused with the juice of the refreshingly cool vegetable, and garnished with skin-on slices are the chic way to chill. [And For] ultra intensity, try using a slicer directly over the glass (or pitcher) to ensure any juice that runs off is contained inside. For an extra fragrance boost, use baby cucumbers for an ultra-intense flavour." According to the website "Cucumber juice is often recommended as a source of silica to improve the complexion and health of the skin, plus cucumber’s high water content makes it naturally hydrating—a must for glowing skin. Cucumbers are a very good source of the vitamins C and the mineral molybdenum. They are also a good source of vitamin A, potassium, manganese, folate, dietary fiber and magnesium and contain the important mineral silica.”It also reduces blood pressure, reduces inflammation and Chinese medicine has recognized its cooling properties for centuries." Seems like an easy enough miracle elixir, though the taste of cucumbers isn't my favorite. (and I always feel dirty when I handle cucumbers, I don't know why)
  • And finally from SUCK UK and right in time for Halloween come glow in the dark shot glasses. Think of the fun you can have, or don't think- let the SUCK UK website tell you the things you can do with "glasses [that]have a tough rubber base that glows when the lights go out. Perfect for finding your lost drink in the dark! OR pour 4 different drinks, move them around, turn out the lights... and take a shot in the dark." I think this would be one of those things that's cool like the first time and less so each successive time, though the "blind russian roulette" idea could be fun for all, or one. It could be useful for the Home Run*.

* the Home Run is taking 4 different shots in a row before you start "pregaming" that I made one of my friends do in the middle of the day quite a few times. it's always good times, though I've never seen anyone pull off the Grand Slam.

Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

but I still want to try; once it hits your lips and all...

  • I feel I would enjoy trying the new Stiletto Vodka, which is the first entirely female owned "spirit" company. And it's for charity "Stiletto Vodka will also donate 25 cents from each bottle sold to support breast cancer and an additional 25 cents to support the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, which helps fund education for lower income children." drinking for a good cause and fabulousness- I could get behind it. It's in available in a classic vodka flavour as well as chocolate, vanilla and mint.
  • The New York Times has published an article about the wonders of $10 or less wine, which is long overdue and greatly appreciated. I usually only spend between 10 and 15 dollars for a bottle and it's worked out well for me
  • though I may be behind the curve. They say Boxed Wine is the new bottled wine (although I still prefer my wine to come from a cube)
  • but Canned Wine is apparently the new Boxed Wine, which is the new Bottled Wine. Oh it's all so terribly confusing though because Wine Sorbet seems to be the newest of them all, made by Wine Cellar Sorbet. I think I want to the pinot noir or their sangria rojo. If only there was a story west of Appalachia...
  • Which doesn't really matter now that I have lost any tolerance for alcohol and I think I may be allergic. That might be a good thing though because a new study is reporting that all types of alcohol(beer-spirits and wine) boost the risk for breast cancer which seems horribly unfair. Especially if it could be imagined that one already had a high risk (genetically) they couldn't even drink away that pain.
  • But you don't have to drink to have fun at a bar. I am so so happy to find this listing of the best Pub Quizzes in the area. Last year I think my friends and I must have gone to like 3 pub quizzes a week because we were seniors and didn't care about work, we enjoyed drinking plus competition, and I have random freaky info stuck in my brain which worked out quite well. Now if only I could get the band back together; we could rule this town.

Liquid Fantasies: Things that are too cool/trendy for me

Yeah I know, these titles sound like a cosmetic or perfume line. Anyway here were just a few links that I couldn't find a place for in my other (Material Lust/Ephemeral Desires) trend watch posts. But I think this works better because it is friday

  • Who knew Bill Gates was a vinter? MicroSoft has created a wine, Blue Monster Reserve, that is only available to Microsoft employees and their families. Now I'm not a big fan of Microsoft but I love wine and would love to sample it, especially before the hackers infect it with a few nasty viruses. I'm sure some lowly employee has to have put a bottle on ebay. I'm curious enough to check (just not right now.)
  • VeeV Spirit is, according to Trendhunter, a "60-proof white spirit that contains the antioxidant fruit, Acai from Brazil. The taste is slightly sweeter than vodka and, they claim, won’t leave you hung over. The company donates $1 from each bottle sold to green initiatives such as the Rain-forest Action Network and Sambazon’s Sustainable Acai Project" and apparently the stars are loving it. Good cause? no hangover? booze? celebrity endorsement? I am so in. (and I'm digging the chill vibe of the music on its website)
  • Enjoy the "bubbly" but the (relatively) low alcohol content of champagne get you down and leaves you feeling sober? Well Vodka O2 (i think that's the name) has created the "world's first" sparkling vodka. Now that sounds fun and would add a fun twist to a lot of cocktails.
  • Speaking of fun has created not a beer belly, but a beer bra, officially named the Wine Rack. Amazing! I just see one problem the more you drink the more your girls shrink, though if the guys are drinking as much as you are they won't care how big your boobs are. Still a really cool idea. I like alcohol and making my boobs look bigger- sounds like a twofer.
  • And finally if you try to not be intoxicated at all times or you're a good person who wants to send your friends thoughtful and personal gifts, then Blends for Friends and their customized tea blends based on personalities would be perfect for you. Actually I think I love that idea (or maybe importantly I love the idea of finding a boy and making him get me this.)
ok y'all; cheers.
