A Thousand and One Posts

When it was the Thousand and First Night,

Dunyazad said to her sister, “Do thou finish for us the History of Ma’aruf!” She replied, “With love and goodly gree, an my lord deign permit me recount it.” Quoth the King, “I permit thee; for that I am fain of hearing it.” So she said:--It hath reached me, O auspicious King, that Ma’aruf would have naught to do with his wife by way of conjugal duty. Now when she saw that he held aloof from her bed and occupied himself with other women, she hated him and jealousy gat the mastery of her and Iblis prompted her to take the seal-ring from him and slay him and make herself Queen in his stead. So she went forth one night from her pavilion, intending for that in which was her husband King Ma’aruf; and it chanced by decree of the Decreer and His written destiny, that Ma’aruf lay that night with one of his concubines; a damsel endowed with beauty and loveliness, symmetry and a stature all grace. And it was his wont, of the excellence of his piety, that, when he was minded to have to lie with a woman, he would doff the enchanted seal-ring from his finger, in reverence to the Holy Names graven thereon, and lay it on the Pillow, nor would he don it again till he had purified himself by the Ghusl-ablution. Moreover, when he had lain with a woman, he was used to order her go forth from him before daybreak, of his fear for the seal-ring; and when he went to the Hammam he locked the door of the pavilion till his return, when he put on the ring, and after this, all were free to enter according to custom. His wife Fatimah the Dung knew of all this and went not forth from her place till she had certified herself of the case. So she sallied out, when the night was dark, purposing to go in to him, whilst he was drowned in sleep, and steal the ring, unseen of him. Now it chanced at this time that the King’s son had gone out, without light, to the Chapel of Ease for an occasion, and sat down over the marble slab of the jakes in the dark, leaving the door open. Presently, he saw Fatimah come forth of her pavilion and make stealthily for that of his father and said in himself, “What aileth this witch to leave her lodging in the dead of the night and make for my father’s pavilion? Needs must there be some reason for this:” so he went out after her and followed in her steps unseen of her. Now he had a short sword of watered steel, which he held so dear that he went not to his father’s Divan, except he were girt therewith; and his father used to laugh at him and exclaim, “Mahallah! [FN#104] This is a mighty fine sword of thine, O my son! But thou hast not gone down with it to battle nor cut off a head therewith.” Whereupon the boy would reply, “I will not fail to cut off with it some head which deserveth cutting.” And Ma’aruf would laugh at his words. Now when treading in her track, he drew the sword from its sheath and he followed her till she came to his father’s pavilion and entered, whilst he stood and watched her from the door. He saw her searching about and heard her say to herself, “Where hath he laid the seal-ring?”; whereby he knew that she was looking for the ring and he waited till she found it and said, “Here it is.” Then she picked it up and turned to go out; but he hid behind the door. As she came forth, she looked at the ring and turned it about in her grasp. But when she was about to rub it, he raised his hand with the sword and smote her on the neck; and she cried a single cry and fell down dead. With this Ma’aruf awoke and seeing his wife strown on the ground, with her blood flowing, and his son standing with the drawn sword in his hand, said to him, “What is this, O my son?” He replied, “O my father, how often hast thou said to me, Thou hast a mighty fine sword; but thou hast not gone down with it to battle nor cut off a head. And I have answered thee, saying, I will not fail to cut off with it a head which deserveth cutting. And now, behold, I have therewith cut off for thee a head well worth the cutting!” And he told him what had passed. Ma’aruf sought for the seal-ring, but found it not; so he searched the dead woman’s body till he saw her hand closed upon it; whereupon he took it from her grasp and said to the boy, “Thou art indeed my very son, without doubt or dispute; Allah ease thee in this world and the next, even as thou hast eased me of this vile woman! Her attempt led only to her own destruction, and Allah-gifted is he who said:--

When forwards Allah’s aid a man’s intent, * His wish in every case shall find consent:
But an that aid of Allah be refused, * His first attempt shall do him damagement.”

Then King Ma’aruf called aloud to some of his attendants, who came in haste, and he told them what his wife Fatimah the Dung had done and bade them to take her and lay her in a place till the morning. They did his bidding, and next day he gave her in charge to a number of eunuchs, who washed her and shrouded her and made her a tomb and buried her. Thus her coming from Cairo was but to her grave, and Allah-gifted is he who said --

We trod the steps appointed for us: and he whose steps are appointed must tread them.
He whose death is decreed to take place in our land shall not die in any land but that.

And how excellent is the saying of the poet:--

I wot not, whenas to a land I fare, * Good luck pursuing, what my lot shall be.
Whether the fortune I perforce pursue * Or the misfortune which pursueth me.

After this, King Ma’aruf sent for the husbandman, whose guest he had been, when he was a fugitive, and made him his Wazir of the Right and his Chief Counsellor. Then, learning that he had a daughter of passing beauty and loveliness, of qualities nature-ennobled at birth and exalted of worth, he took her to wife; and in due time he married his son. So they abode awhile in all solace of life and its delight and their days were serene and their joys untroubled, till there came to them the Destroyer of delights and the Sunderer of societies, the Depopulator of populous places and the Orphaner of sons and daughters. And glory be to the Living who dieth not and in whose hand are the Keys of the Seen and the Unseen!”

"Ladies and gentlemen*, whether you like it or not-Hedwig!"

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I've been in Nevada, outside Vegas since late last Sunday working for a Miracle and the Edwards Campaign in preparation for the caucuse on the 19th, so that's where I'll be until next Sunday. And I'll be sure to write more about my feelings and all that jazz later but this weekend is a huge statewide canvassing effort so I need to rest up so I can be at my persuasive best.
Anyway now that apologies are out of the way, I had also been stuck because my next post (this post) would be my 1000th post and I wanted to make it somewhat special and so since I couldn't think of anything that would stand out and because this movie is my absolute favorite and an inspiration for this site I decided to (after a lot of ripping and uploading and all other types of illegal technological mayhem) post it.
And so here is 2001's so utterly beyond fabulous "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (a movie I loved so much that I saw the stage play in Rome, in Italian, which was quite an experience.) But... I hope you love it as much as I do

*and those in between
(and just remember the fat lady has never sung after the first two scenes)

Your Stuck in my Head Song of the Day

Your Stuck in My Head Song of the Days is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” and I know it’s cheesy and cliché but it is a great fun festive song and I’m allowed to be girly. Though if it helps any of my “music cred” the other songs I was thinking about were Marilyn Manson’s “Cake and Sodomy” (and there’s some great footage of them “before they were big”) but I thought that may not fit the “season” (and at home over the next week I feel I’ll get plenty of cake; sodomy? Not so much)
and the song I was actually excited about doing for a while. It’s a song by The Vandals “My First X-Mas as a Woman” a song I think I first heard when I was like 13 on KROQ and one that immediately became a favorite of mine (hopefully at this point I don’t have to spell it out.)
And I was so excited because this year is really like my first Christmas as a Woman and it’s exiting and all and for the first time its true (besides the post-op stuff-I’m planning on that happening before my 10 year high school reunion so I have a few years left.)
But it’s a really fun song and I thought it would be perfect

With Christmas upon us it's time to be honest
and follow my dreams and to face
a life of delusion and gender confusion
no longer will be the case

I never wanted army men or basketballs,
I only wanted pantyhose and Barbie dolls
And dressing up in mother's clothing.

My whole life I've been feeling only feminine
It always seemed so useless trying to be a man
Now that's a ghost of Christmas past

Now it feels like the very first time,
cuz it's going to be the very first time,
that Christmas feels right to me.

And I know that I'm looking good
Just like a real girl should-
It's my first Christmas as a woman

A doctor reconstructed my genitals
And now I'm waiting underneath the mistletoe
for a guy who could love a girl like me.

I took the hormones and I got my breasts
This season's gonna be the best to me.

I won't have to tuck it behind me
Since I got my brand new vagina
It's my first Christmas as a woman.

Chop if off! Chop if off! Chop if off!
My penis, chop it off
It's no use to me.
Cut it off!
Chop it off! Chop it off!
My penis, cut it off so I can finally be
A Woman...

Now I'm finally happy cuz I made my goal
to be a post operation transsexual.
now I'm a pretty lady

Now it feels like the very first time,
cuz it's going to be the very first time,
that Christmas feels right to me.

Cuz I know that I'm looking good
Just like a real girl should-
It's my first Christmas as a woman

But unfortunately there wasn't a video for it (besides this) so I decided that Mariah Carey in her peak and Johnny Depp, together would be an appropriate gift in this season (and plus all really want for Christmas is YOU!) so here is “technically” Your Stuck in My Head Song of the Day- Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”

(ok there may be some sporadic posts over the next week or so [or maybe forever if I decide I’m bored of this experiment] but this is my last real day of posting. So after a 50 post week, which was my record, here’s a 60+ post week. I think that’s a nice enough send off till the new year. )
It’s a Wonderful Life; enjoy it

Not Even Close To The Worst Shirts I've Ever Seen

You know those shirts that have an double entendre or offensive statement on them? Well Radar has a feature where a (hopefully an intrepid cub) reporter goes around to various social settings in New York wearing shirts with such "vulgarities" as "I Shaved My Balls For This?" "He Loves The Cock [with arrow pointed to the right]*" "I'll Fuck The Fat Friend" 'I'm going to stick my fist up your ass**" or my absolute favorite (and one that actually made me gasp for a sec): "My Other Dick is Black."
And the best (or worst part if you hope for drama or conflict) is that no one seemed to care, most people brushing it aside with a "whatever." I'm sure there's something to be said here about the "deteriorating of moral standards and decency in society" or the "coarsening of culture" but I'm not that type.
Now I've never actually seen people wear those kind of crude shirts, and I wonder who would besides as a joke, but those shirts and that feature reminded me of two similar shirts that I saw in New Orleans like 4 years apart.
The first one was during AmeriCorps when we were stationed outside of the city to help the Red cross with Tropical Strom Isidore and Hurricane Lili. One night as we're on Bourbon street enjoying ourselves after like 6 straight 13 hour days and one of my friends bought a shirt that read "FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING FUCK" and actually wore it! It blew me away-I wonder if she still has it.
And the other was about 6 months after Hurricane Katrina when I went down with a class to do relief work and make a documentary and there were so many shirts in stores that read (though I don't recall seeing anyone wearing one) Katrina Gave Me The Blow Job of My Life. I kind of wish I had bought one just for sentimentality's sake..

(yeah I'm not quite happy with this post, but I'm tired, my chest hurts, nothing is really grabbing me right now and I don't want to think. But as a heads up I think, in order to reclaim some server space, that I'm going to delete all mp3 files from before, let's say the start of October. and if there's something that you really want that's unavailable you can always send me an email and I'll try to help you out (and I won't even require flattery)

* I think i need to get that for one of my friends- there's a running (almost 4 year old) joke about that so I'm sure he'd enjoy it.
**who says that?!

About the Last, oh Week or so.

Sorry about that. Anyway my computer, as old and loved as she is kinda broke down a little bit and I had to get a new part that did something with my power supply, I'm not sure exactly but with still trying to move in and having to fly back and forth between L.A. and San Francisco (not to mention I had to specially order it form the Apple Store online) my "hiatus" went on for a little longer than I had planned. But to be completely honest and open I actually finally got the piece last Tuesday night. After a night of letting my computer charge and all that good stuff I was thinking about posting last Wednesday but, in certain regards I'm a little neurotic and I didn't want to start posting again on a day that was the ending of the month and also in the middle of the week. So I decided to wait until the first monday to get this wagon back on its wheels.
What did I do during the time I wasn't tied to this laptop and trying to find content? I'm glad you asked

  • Last Thursday and Friday I read Hubby's letters and responding to them, maybe a little too verbosely. I wrote 3 seperate letters one of which was about 11 pages hand written. We "discussed" objectivism and existentialism and I also discovered that my apartment is less well decorated than is her hut in Burkina Faso.
  • In another example of maybe I really did need this site as a place to ramble, 3 of my guy friends and I started on a Gmail "conversation" that is at more than 200 messages within the past like 13 days. The topics ranged from sports, to sports, to superiority of cities to me writing a response (which I didn't plan on being so angry as it turned out) to my conservative friend who has started using the term "islamofascism" in which I basically told him to put up or shut up and join the military. Then I kinda freaked out and wrote one of my girlfriends if that was too harsh, because I was worried that I'd no longer be his friend (my compulsion to have everyone like me is kind of irritating..like all the time.)
  • Didn't dress up for Halloween for only the second time in the last six years
  • Discovered that my metabolism is pretty insane and that I can lose about 6 pounds in a week just by not eating after 7.
  • Decided that I should go to New York for new years and see friends (all of whom seem to live there.) This travel plan made me realize I need to buy some boots.
  • On Facebook found out there's someone else with my name, a Jacqueline Dey from Australia. I guess she was "the first one" though; she's 3 years older than I.
  • Disengaged from celebrity gossip for the first time in quite awhile. And it felt glorious.
  • Realized I really don't like the cold (something I seem to always forget during the spring and summer months when I think the cold will never come.)
  • Announced that if John Edwards didn't win the presidency that I would renounce my United States citizenship (because I did not want to be associated with people who don't understand that John Edwards is not only the best candidate but also the Hope for our time.
  • Worried at all the press that Barack has been getting in the last week as Hillary seemed to be faltering and started dreading the possibility of Barack making up ground.
  • Almost vomited while reading this article by Andrew Sulivan about "The Great [Half] White Hope" Barack
  • I actually lost sleep writing in my head an article that pretty much said " even if you vote for Barack that doesn't mean you're not racist and in fact you're going so far overboard trying to prove you're not racist that you actually are. If you looked past skin color you'd see John Edwards stands for everything that Barack stole from him, and more. but without the kenyan father."
  • Conspired with my conservative friend to make up campaign signs that say simply "VOTE barack HUSSEIN obama" and plant them throughout the South, and especially in South Carolina. I'm sure that may change a few minds of the good ol' red blooded military families down there. (lee atwater may have been evil, but he won."
  • Marveled at the ownage in John Edwards' "Politics of Parsing" video and answered Time magazine's question in the affirmative.
  • Also while reading Time found out that I'm a bad cat mother.
  • Watched Network like 4 times and decided it was the most prescient and one of the best movies ever and got sorta angry that Rocky won best picture.
  • Finally understood that there are real people out there when I got an email from Jake Lipman about a post I did about her marriage announcement to Philip Rothman. She seems really cool and luckily she wasn't offended. ( I did not realize she starred as the Little Prince. umm..awesome!)
  • Passed out too many nights at like 9:30. Thought that while I had amazing dreams, I should probably get out more.
i'm sure i did something else...who knows? whatevs.

Your Stuck In My Head Song of The Day

Today I've had Fiona Apple's Limp in my head, or as close to it as possible, and no I don't have any particular reason for it besides it came on my iPod and Fiona with her lyrics and that chorus

When I think of it, My fingers turn to fists!
I never did anything to you man!
No matter what I try, You beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down, Make me cry, get off now, baby
It won't be long 'till you'll be lying limp in your own hands!

lodged itself pretty firmly. I kind of wish I did have a particular and personal reason- my life would be far more interesting that way. Is it too late to do something like "yeah I have no reason for this song today, it's not like someone screwed me over :p" is it? ::shrugs shoulders:: I guess there's some joy in lack of drama.
Anyway here is Your Stuck in My Head Song of the Day Limp by Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple-Limp (mp3) buy
WHEN THE PAWN
Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King
What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight
And He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring
There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might
So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand
And Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights
And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land
And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right

and my computer is really annoying and spastic today, sorry about the quality and erractic-ness of the post, hopefully tomorrow it will be back up to speed but if it's not.... see ya sometimes, I guess.

Your Stuck in my Head Song of the Day

First off I'd like to apologize for the suckiness of today, I was just really lethargic and didn't want to write, which was a good thing because I kind of had writer's block.I was going to write about how today Columbus, who unleashed one of the greatest genocides in history is being honored, because it was done in the name of progress it is acceptable, but I didn't want to think that hard or be that passionate. So once I found out today was an actual holiday I decided to term my lack of productivity as either taking advantage of the holiday or protesting it.
And in the spirit of protest Public Enemy's Fight the Power came to me, especially the infamous lyrics
"Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Motherfuck him and John Wayne
Cause I'm Black and I'm proud
I'm ready and hyped plus I'm amped
Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps
which is how I feel about Columbus- he's no hero to me and then when I started listening to Ice Cube back when he was a militant socially conscious rapper instead of trying to finish houses in family comedies and so that kind of made me go with that first instinct, the instinct that goes back to when Flavor Flav was a hype man sidekick instead of a racial embarassing (and quite entertaining) minstrel. And so here is Your Stuck in my Head Song of the Day, Fight The Power by Public Enemy (and here's the long version of the video- droppin' knowledge you know)

Public Enemy- Fight the Power (mp3)
I'll try to do better tomorrow, I promise.

Your Stuck in my Head Song(s) of the Day

Maybe it's a Wednesday thing but again today I've had three very different songs swirling around and melding together in my head. I know PJ Harvey's Rid of Me got in there because of this post, and The Coral's Simon Diamond may have crept in when I was researching and discovered the 84 karat diamond. Incubus' Megalomaniac? I'm not sure- either I had thoughts of world domination, thought of GWeeB or maybe just had the preceding two songs form and stick together and remind me of it. Who knows.
Either way enjoy Your Stuck in My Head Song(s) of the Day,

Simon Diamond by The Coral
(the video is far from the best but hopefully you get a feel)

The Coral-Simon Diamond (mp3)

Incubus- Megalomanic (you can watch the official video here- damn no embedding by request)

Incubus-Megalomanic (mp3)

and PJ Harvey's Rid of Me

PJ Harvey-Rid of Me (mp3)

And speaking of getting rid of me, tomorrow I actually have to do quite a few things other than this blog so I'm not sure how erratically timed my postings are going to be. But we'll see. And Happy Thursday in advance.
Ok I gotta go and try to watch Kid Nation and Pushing Daisies at the same time.

500 Posts.

Ugh. I don't understand how I've done 500 of these. (or 499 before this one, to be specific)
I've included other anniversary post below if you wanna see how this blog has (degenerated) evolved though they're all really kind of awkward and I don't understand how it worked out so that all of them seem to be Confessionals or TMIs
What a long strange trip it's been:
1st Post
100th Post
200th Post
300th Post (this is probably the only worthwhile one of these)
400th Post

But since 500 is a bigger number and thus better and more important I wanted to do something kind of different. I wanted to share with you a song I adore. I was thinking about calling it my favorite song, though I think a favorite song would be one you listen to and sing all the time, and I don't really do that for this song and plus I don't think I have a single favorite (though according to my iTunes playlist my most played is, I think Joy Division's Warsaw-go me.) Rather Pyramid Song is probably the song that is most important to me. It's the song I listen to at those important moments (the last time the morning of my graduation.) whenever I'm down or need reassurance, it is a reminder that everything is not horrible and that I can get through whatever I need to. It calms me down and soothes me and... tells me there is nothing really to be afraid of. That everything will be alright.
It is pretty much sacred to me and I thought this 500th post was a fitting and honorable enough occasion to show it.

i jumped in the river and what did i see?
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

i jumped in the river
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt
there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

(lyrics from green plastic radiohead, one of my go-to sites and one that has a lot more really cool and illuminating information about this song. bolding is my own )

Radiohead-Pyramid Song [download]

So that was post 500. (can i stop now?) Onto 501...

Regarding the Events of Today

So today somehow I've had just around 7,000 new hits and I have no idea why at the moment. I thought maybe that it was my Chris Crocker Backlash post and maybe I was at the vanguard of a movement then I guessed maybe the one regarding The Mystery of Steve Fossett may have begun an urban legend (my ego is huuge)
And though a part of me wants to sing this

(p.s. does anyone know where I can get the book, Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity, that the dialogue of this song, Popular came from?
my incredible insecurity makes me think that (for some reason) it's a joke and the sudden uptick is a result of a mocking laugh (the fact that I mi spelled the word "here" as "hear" still haunts me) that of course this can't last and that "They're All Going to Laugh At You" and really this is the plan, except for the telekinetic fiery holocaust part

Oh well qué será, será. I am pretty excited, though, about studying google analytics tomorrow and discovering whatever desire it is that drove this traffic; I'm more than open to pandering.

Best Band Ever*

*according to me, at this moment, subject to change.
I really thought that would take longer today, but thank goodness for small mercies.

Anyway I'm back, and starting the day off far later than normal- it's kind of weird. Last night as I was fretting, as I usual do on Monday nights, about this very thing I decided that today I would try to profile someone incredibly different from (especially last week's) most of the bands that I've allowed "this honor"(i.e. he's black) but it was firmly settled this morning when I started singing one of his songs in an attempt to remember a(n incredibly bizarre) dream. And so Otis Redding is the Best Band Ever*

The firs time I heard an Otis Redding song I didn't know it was an Otis song, and even if I did it wouldn't have registered because I had no idea who it was. I was maybe 10 and the song was Hard to Handle, (as covered) by the Black Crowes. I always liked that song but always assumed they had written it, whenever my thoughts dwelt on the subject, which was rare if ever. I guess it was around senior year in high school when I was getting more into music and was digging the Sixties that I first "got" (Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay (a song that perfectly sums up any young adult's lifes and worries and thoughts). It was then that I actually researched Otis Redding and started listening to his other stuff and I think I can honestly say that I didn't understand why they called it "soul" music until I heard him. I know it sounds kind of cheesy but when he's singing "I've Been Loving You Too Long, I can't stop now"
(in Monterey)
it reaches into my soul and makes me remember anyone I've ever felt that way about, when he's singing about a "Pain in My Heart" just not letting him be, somehow I get that same pain (just listen to the song- don't watch the video)

His songs weren't purely about lust, which was (and is) what a lot of soul music seems to be about. The longing in his voice, ah it's so heartbreaking it's fucking magical.
and his version of Satisfaction, if not better than the Stones' original is damn close

That a black boy from Georgia could move hippie kids and get them to move like that is astounding.
Out of all those songs though I think the most heartbreaking is "I've Got Dreams to Remember"

I know you said he was just a friend
But I saw him kiss you again and again
These eyes of mine they don't fool me
Why did he hold you so tenderly?
I've got dreams
Dreams to remember
I've got dreams
Dreams to remember"
Almost like a plea to if you have take away everything else and the reality, to at least leave him those dreams. It's all he has left
During AmeriCorps it amused me to no end that the feminist anthem Respect was written and originally recorded by a man- seemed kind of ironic. Otis' version is more " i'm a man working hard for you and all I want is respect"

I'm not sure if I like it better than Aretha's but that's a wonderful thing about music how words and melodies can be reinterpreted in thousands of ways simply by modifying the rhythym or phrasing or a change in key.
I really think my absolute favorite Otis Redding song (which is hard because he is one of my 10 core artists who I can't travel without and from who I kind of branch out) is Try A Little Tenderness. It really is such a universal message (and one that I maybe just made up) but one that is incredibly simple to live by and follow, just try a little tenderness in your dealings with others, just a little compassion would make this world so much better. But even without that message that musical buildup until it just explodes... can't be touched

He was such an amazing talent, it's always really tragic when the amazing ones die. (40 years ago this december) And I didn't realize he was so young when it happened. Though he really looked and seemed older he was only 26 (poor guy didn't even make it into the 27 Club.) Seriously if I was a musician back then you would not be able to put me on a small plane, especially in the winter (though to be honest you couldn't get me to do that now). (Sitting on) the Dock of the Bay was actually released after his death, which kind of adds to the mystique. And so for all of these reasons Otis Redding is the Best Band Ever*

Fun Facts from Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a site that kind of tracks visitors how they come to the site where they're from, even what type of browser they use and more. I've become rather obsessed with it recently just because it is really informative and sort of fun to find where you may be visiting this site from. For instance I am read (and obviously loved) on every continent. Except Antartica. Lazy fuckin' penguins. Anyway here are some other fun things I've learned which could be of interest, and if not, meh.

Top 5 visited pages (besides the main page)
1. This Feels Very Wrong (the Megan Richter post, which led a tonne of people here, surprisingly)
2: Celebrity Showdown: Elizabeth Banks vs. Rachel McAdams (which was actually a huge leader before the Megan Richter story)
3. An Example or Two Why Hollywood is Doomed (somebody didn't like my take on the fake K-Ville.
4. Note to ATP Tour Players: Shane Stant is Probably Available ( I should thank This Recording for a lot of that)
5 (tied): Duke Football: You Heard it Hear First (I'm sure this has been used mostly for mockery. I must say I deserve it. And wow I can't believe I mispelled "here" fuck. Is it unethical to change it now?)
Things that are too cool/trendy for me (from 9/5)
and Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story.

Top 5 Cities by Visitors:
1. Irvine. (i don't know either but I'm big in Irvine>)
2. L.A.
3.(not set) (whatever that means)
4.New York
5. Chicago (what can I say? I'm a big city girl)

Top 5 Countries (besides America)
1.Canada
2. U.K.
3. Germany
4.France
5. Brazil

Top 5 Keywords:
1. megan richter (by an 8 to 1 margin, wow)
2.megan richter missing
3 (tie). " a dream or a song"
"human giant"
colt brennan
duke tailgate
stuck in my head song of the day.

So thats that and I should probably write more about what people wanna read but really, where's the fun in that?
(and FreeDarko has sent me some traffic but I have no idea why or what they might have linked to, but if you know let me know. K Thanks.)

Your Simply Amazing Stuck in My Head Song of the Day

Ok I need to finish this really quickly so I can peace. Anyway I decided today when I was in my kitchen cooking and having a dance party with my dogs (aka me dancing around while they stared confused at me) that if I were to ever start stripping that Paul Weller's I Walk on Gilded Splinters is totally my moneymaking song. And so that is your stuck in my head song of the day. I've always thought the song was a great strutting and walking song but I never realized how damn sexy that groove and bass line is. I can't help but feel hot and sexy and like a badass when I hear it. Here's a live version

Anyway I'm off Monday so you guys enjoy your three day weekend. As for now I'm dressed to go shake my ass. I think I will.

ciao tutti. stay in touch but more importantly stay safe out there.

Post 300! Purely Self-Congratulatory

Wow, how the hell do I have 300 posts? Anyway on this momentous occasion I felt it's only appropriate to tell you more about the site in an effort for you to know me better, as a reward for you, you mythic loyal reader for being there for the last 299 of these rants and rambles.
So the address midnighttransmission, as well as the "title" of the blog A Dream or A Song comes from either my favorite or my second favorite song (behind Wig in a Box) from my favorite move Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
The song is Midnight Radio and when I was trying to think of an address and name for this site that actually meant something to me, but that would be somewhat familiar to other people I focused a lot on Hedwig and memorable lyrics from that film. The line "and you're shining like the brightest star, a transmission on a midnight radio" is such a pretty and hopeful image and that is sort of what I wanted this site to be (failed though I have); a beacon of sorts. And I also figured that a midnight transmission implies some danger and/or illictness and at midnight the posts I transmitted would be true and , in a way , like a beacon to reach others and tell them that I am/was here.
About the song, I actually get really emotional and happy whenever I hear it...so I think I'll put it here for you enjoy as well, though it really is better if you've already seen the movie (if you haven't, what's wrong with you? buy it, watch it, love it.)

As I think I've mentioned before the picture to the right, in that about me section, is of Candy Darling, one of my tragic idols who I'm just a little fascinated by. The quote " I'd rather learn from a bird to sing than teach 10000 stars how not to dance is from a poem by e.e. cummings. I stumbled upon it while looking for something beautiful to send to Hubby and I thought these words would be a lovely gift. It's assumed title, though cummings didn't title his work, is "you shall above all things be glad and young" {ED: and isn't that just a wonderful thing to wish on anyone}

you shall above all things be glad and young.
For if you're young, whatever life you wear

it will become you;and if you are glad
whatever's living will yourself become
Girlboys may nothing more than boygirls need:
i can entirely her only love

whose any mystery makes every man's
flesh put space on;and his mind take off time

that you should ever think, may god forbid
and(in his mercy)your true lover spare:
for that way knowledge lies, the foetal grave
called progress,and negation's dead undoom.

I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance

As for the blog description, or whatever is in that I think it's a peach box, the quote comes from one of my favorite movies Se7en. When I started this I had nothing in particular that I was going to focus on, like politics or sports, or zebras, but rather this site was just going to be whatever was on my mind at any given time. Kind of like the journals of John Doe that Somerset is referencing.

For those of you (no one) who has asked, and more because I want to see my name in something fun when I vanity search in a few months my official and legal name will be Jacqueline Frances Stella Dey. I've always liked the name Jacqueline, it's so pretty and noble, not too common and exudes glamour and how it could also be abbreviated to Jacqui, which is so cute and functional and the fact that it means both (referring back to the story of Jacob and Esau) "one who supplants", which is kind of what it would be, supplanting my previous identity (Jacob did get the better of that deal), in a way, but in a more pleasant light it also means "may God protect." Frances is in honor of St. Francesca Romana who's feast day is my birthday (plus the fact she's from Rome means it is meant. to. be!) and Francesca would be too much. Speaking of Rome when I was there and studying Christian iconography and apse mosaic art, in most mosaic somewhere written in gold would be the phrase "stella dei" or something similar, which means Star of God. I think Stella is such a pretty yet hip name so I wanted it, and so as a last name Dey seemed perfect, to be a star of god, I couldn't resist. I'm a sucker for poetry. So that's how Jacqueline Frances Stella Dey came to be, or the name at least. (it may just be folk etymology or etymology that I just made up, but that's good enough for me. and speaking of folk etymology stella day, star day, star of the day, that works too.)

Finally, if you click on my profile I just figured out how to post an audio clip and I couldn't decide what I wanted to have it say. As of writing this the quote is...well you can just check it. But I love that quote! Hopefully you know where it's from. But I'm not sure if I want to stick with that one. I was debating between that and the last lines from Sunset Boulevard. I'm just worried if I stick with the Silence of the Lambs one, that along with the Se7en quote may make this site seem a little darker and violent than it really is, whereas if I change my mind and go with Gloria Swanson, well that and the picture of Candy in a director's chair could make it seem I'm fascinated by the ultrafemme and glamourous nature of cinematic stars in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Hmm, know that I write it out I think I prefer the latter. And this is totally how I want to go out:

Monday Morning Cuteness:Reunited

So I'm back from my sojourn in the Great White North of this state, it was gorgeous and a pretty good time (though a few things didn't work out as planned) and I really want to move up there now.( I would kill to work for the Tides Center; pray for mojo) And with this being my first post in a week or so here's your Monday Morning Cuteness, which I found through Best Week Ever. A little background may be in order here. This lion was orphaned as a cub and taken in and raised by human parents. They, being good environmentalist, realized that it was time for him to be set free in the wild, and so he was. The following video takes place a year after his release into the wild, and is the first time they had seen each other since.

Wow. Here's more of their story here. That is seriously like the best thing I've seen like ever.

As for today and maybe the next few as well, I haven't really kept up with news or any of my sources (a/k/a/ I haven't planned or researched or snagged anything),so I don't know how lean and free of awesomeness or what not this site will be but we'll work through it together.

Your Simply Amazing Stuck in My Head Song of the Day

I was first reminded of this song when I found an article about a new touch screen high tech instrument called a ReacTable Tactile Synth. I'm not sure how exactly it works, here's a better description and a sweet demo video as well, but it looks super cool and pretty and reminds me of the new MicroSoft Surface thing. As for the sound that it creates, let's just say I enjoy that kind of out there distortion and challenging noise and I totally would use one for my band Baby Jane, but it is definitely not for everyone.
But Björk, who this sound totally meshes with, saw and heard it and started using it on her tour so its been getting some notices now. The song that was linked to the story was Bjork's Pluto, which is a really awesome song off of her Homogenic album (great album, great cover), if you love Björk, and if not...you should always try different things. As I was preparing for this post and looking up some stuff I looked up the lyrics because they are a tad indecipherable (just by listening I never understood more than "Excuse Me But I Just Have To Explode") but they are actually sort of uplifting and fit in with that new notion of starting anew and escaping pain to find a better peace (or that kind of jazz)

Excuse me
But I just have to
Explode
Explode this body
Off me...

I'll be brand new
Brand new tomorrow
A little bit tired
But brand new

Thats how I feel so much of the time. Anyway I'll be going up to San Fran next week where hopefully I'll get a job, or laid, though prospects for either..I have none at the moment. Accordingly there will be new no posts (though you can always go through the archive; hours, days even of awesomeness!) So for now I will leave you with Björk, my little lovely Icelandic fairy singing Pluto (UPDATE: or here's a version with a naked guy that I actually like a lot; it has to be a Matthew Barney work but the one below has new coolness ) at this years Glastonbury Festival (thats the reactable in the beginning.)

Okay everyone. And to each of you, Courage.
XOXOXO
Love, Jacqui

I'm Back! (hopefully)

Sweethearts, my internet is finally working again!! After a week of living like it was 1994 and extreme anxiety I finally got everything settled and back to working order. I think it should be able to stay this way (knock on wood.) So tomorrow I should be back on my "normal schedule" though over the next week or so of course I will be trying to catch you up on all that has happened in the past week or so, or at least my take on it. I'm a bit tired today from a lot of things today so this will be my only post but I am really really excited to get back on the horse. And sometime, maybe this weekend I'll try to post for 24 hours straight to try to revive my post per day average (because I'm all about the stats ha!) But thank G*d, I heart you all and yay!!!!

Site Update

I am so sorry about the last couple of days (and probably for the next few as well) for not posting. My internet has like gone out and the router, or whatever is dead so I have to get a new one. right now I'm downtown and so getting wireless, but I only want to work on this blog like in bed so until I get that resolved this page will be quite boring, and my post per day average is going to suffer tremendously. but I miss you all and keep up the fight!

(and I'm beginning to think this was divine retribution from the NAACP over my n-word post. Dave Chappelle and Tracy Jordan were right.)

About this Weekend

As you may have noticied (oh ye mythical reader) I didn't post this weekend. I fear I may have set a bad precendent by posting the first 2 weekends of this epic blog, but after like 3 straight weeks of posting and somehow posting at least 5 posts a day, I realized I was beginning to approach this as more of an obligation than something I wanted to do, to use as a space to just rant.
That obligation combined with the fact my mood is sometimes erratic (and this weekend I wasn't in a happy place) plus my hair was pissing me off and whenever I tried the NY Times website, it would screw up my computer and of course the usual stress meant I just needed some time to myself and to get away from this damn Powerbook. So amongst other things I had a spa day on Saturday then ended up falling asleep at like 9:30 last night, so the weekend was quite relaxed.
I'm sorry I didn't have a more serious purpose or reason like Frank at PostSecret (who explained why he was off last week, like I asked last Sunday) but it is what it is. And I'm not sure if 140 posts is a lot for less than a month, but it feels like it and so while this may not be as prolific as some, at least I update more than Sebastian at this blog. I still may post on weekends but I'll probably use that time to recharge and not think of everything as a potential post. As for Sunday Confessional I think I may change that to TMI Thursday, but we'll see.

And now with that out of the way on with the show.
