Your Stuck in My Head Song of the Days is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” and I know it’s cheesy and cliché but it is a great fun festive song and I’m allowed to be girly. Though if it helps any of my “music cred” the other songs I was thinking about were Marilyn Manson’s “Cake and Sodomy” (and there’s some great footage of them “before they were big”) but I thought that may not fit the “season” (and at home over the next week I feel I’ll get plenty of cake; sodomy? Not so much) and the song I was actually excited about doing for a while. It’s a song by The Vandals “My First X-Mas as a Woman” a song I think I first heard when I was like 13 on KROQ and one that immediately became a favorite of mine (hopefully at this point I don’t have to spell it out.) And I was so excited because this year is really like my first Christmas as a Woman and it’s exiting and all and for the first time its true (besides the post-op stuff-I’m planning on that happening before my 10 year high school reunion so I have a few years left.) I have a pretty complicated relationship with Muse. i first heard of them in 2004 when my esteemed partner in LME introduced me to them and I immediately liked. The singer reminded and was obviously influenced by Thom Yorke. Anyway my Everlyn and I were talking about them and she said something like "yeah they're like Radiohead, but better" which as all my friends have learned is blasphemy to me. I'm not sure if I spoke to here for two weeks but as much as I wanted to punish Muse for her heresy I couldn't; you can't deny talent.(though I'm still unnecessarily bitter enough to not throw myself wildly behind them) And that talent is so so clear and on display in Stockholm Syndrome, such a kick ass, heavy soaring song that begs to be played loudly. And I usually oblige, singing along (poorly no doubt) to the falsetto parts even though I never knew the lyrics besides "this is the last time I'll abandon you" until this night:

I first thought of this song when I heard some advertisement about someone playing at the Orpheum, which of course made my mind wandered to a dream I had about being Alice in a musical Alice in Wonderland that would run at the Orpheum for about two years and about how when it was over I'd end up a STAH. A notion that made me rememeber "In the headlights Of a stretch car You're a star" and so a song by U2 from the Batman Forever, "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" got stuck in my head. I think when I first heard the song I was drawn to its title, which seemed really cool to me (and I later learned kinda related to Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me), and also its connection to the movie. But now the song stands up own its own just with its amazing musicality and amazingly catchy "Hold Me. Thrill Me. Kiss Me. Kill Me." chorus and it's soaring string orchestra at the end is just so dramatic and I always enjoy it.

I had originally planned on doing this post on Sunday night but then I stumbled upon Zeitgeist and that rocked my world and I decided that this way would actually be better that this way over the long weekend I could leave you with something amazing and tragic but uplifting and hopeful. I first heard of Randy Pausch through this article in the New York Times and I was immediately intrigued. He's a 47 year old professor who has been diagnosed with being in the last stages of terminal pancreatic cancer and he still has such an amazing outlook and sense of humor and vitality, it really makes you stop and think about what you really have to complain about. He seems like such a one in a million person. You can read more about him from the article or through google, of course.
But what sparked his unexpected and great fame was a series at Carnegie Mellon where I believe select professors were to write and deliver what would be their "last lecture" only in this case, for Dr. Pausch it very well could have been.
One of his proteges and friends has maintained and archive of some of his other lectures at Dr. Pausch's personal website which includes his personal favorite, one on Time Management (that I could've used years ago but is still really helpful.) It is from ten years ago so some of it is talk about technology is horribly outdated but he does give really effective and practical advice that anyone can utilize. Yesterday as I was kind of roaming around feeling a little tired and nervous/gloomy, this song came on my iPod and brightened up my mood to the point where I couldn't help but have a silly grin on my face, I felt peppier and I'm sure I put a little more rhythm in my step. It was a very bouncy moment.
The song is by The Rosebuds a band out of The Triangle and this song "Get Up, Get Out" is so much fun and all about going out and being with friends that there's no way it wouldn't be perfect as a welcome to the weekend. It reminds me of like a disco vibe, of a club with the excitement and the energy and a mirrorball spinning and shining. I don't think I'm doing anything tonight, I'm way too sore and plus tomorrow is so exciting. Not only is Michigan-Ohio State on (at 9 a.m.!) but the most anticipated game in Duke Football history will be nationally televised and I have to watch that. Duke versus Notre Dame- we're totally going to win.
Maybe it was last night, or Wednesday when I got this link from one of my friends to check out Danish Rhythm, a sketch comedy group that counts a high school classmate as well as the eternal "Frary Krundy" (fran kranz and gary lundy- the two best actors at my school while i was there.) One of the videos attached to the group was this about a couple who get a sweet deal at an apartment, but the apartment comes with a catch- its very own Fosse Dancer
Naturally that reminded me of one of my favorite show tunes (as well as all purpose phrases) All That Jazz from Chicago. It's such a fun high energy song with amazing lyrics that I may quote a little too much in daily life:

It's Friday night and I'm undecided about going out, particularly because I have to go up north this weekend and handle some business, but even that indecision won't stop me from enjoying myself. And this song by this band is an amazing fun and energetic song, perfect for dancing around; but what else would you expect from Los Campesinos! a band with an exclamation point in it's name? It's definitely not music for moping. The song You! Me! Dancing is so fun it should be illegal. I dig it as well because I'm pretty sure I can't dance a single step either, though that rarely stops me nowadays.

Today was one of those days when I had a couple of songs in my head and so I cou;dn't decide and didn't think it would be fair to just pick one- because honestly there is always the chance I would never put the other into this spot. I had Shores of California by the Dresden Dolls and Scream for More by Kate Ryan basically alternating in my head all day, one song about screaming for more (I'll assume in the throes of passion) and the other referencing masturbation in the midwest ( a strange medley I know.)

I seriously think a 40+ blog post week is comparable to a 40 hour work week (except without that delicious currency) and so I'm actually looking forward to going out tonight and having some fun this weekend. I've got some shoes I can wear like a dove. I'm ready to strut those shoes and to go roaming in the night. So it's a pretty good thing (and amazing coincidence) that I have this song stuck in my head right now. This is another one of those songs that I've had in my head for a couple of days. It's the Heinrich Maneuver, by one of my 3 current favorite bands, Interpol. The song is actually pretty upbeat and peppy (or at least peppier than most of their other stuff) and even though it's been called a "bi-coastal kiss off" I still think it has a happy quality. And so I can dig it on a Friday night. I don't understand the video exactly, and though apparently some people don't like it, I still think it's pretty and technically cool. Somehow this really has begun to seem like a job, though of course I only do it because I'm bored and it amuses me, but the reason I can tell was when I woke up this morning I was really looking forward to my last post of the week. So that I could chill during the weekend. Now that I'm here I don't know if I should really go out; tonight I still feel a little queasy and I am pretty broke, but we'll see. I mean it is Friday. So your stuck in my head song of the day is from The Long Winters, who are amazing amazing amazing live, probably the best concert, in its way, that I've ever seen (What Made Milwaukee Famous actually was their first opener.) Before they were on they were just hanging out eating thai food, I think, outside by their van and once on stage their stage banter was so cool and they played purely requests for like an hour. Seem like a really genuine group of guys. The song is Blue Diamonds, a song with a great bass line catchy beat and memorable chorus. Ok I need to finish this really quickly so I can peace. Anyway I decided today when I was in my kitchen cooking and having a dance party with my dogs (aka me dancing around while they stared confused at me) that if I were to ever start stripping that Paul Weller's I Walk on Gilded Splinters is totally my moneymaking song. And so that is your stuck in my head song of the day. I've always thought the song was a great strutting and walking song but I never realized how damn sexy that groove and bass line is. So today I got really happy to the point I started crying. And it was all because of Facebook, well not all because of Facebook, but you'll see. Anyway I had friended a girl I went to middle school (and I thought some high school as well.) She was one of my favorite people back then and shameful for me I hadn't thought about her for many a year until then and I had actually forgotten her last name. Anyway today she accepted my request and she looks so happy and just like I remember and she's also a lesbian. And when I saw that I just got really happy, and I realized it was a similar emotion, of crying with joy, that I felt with the Christine Daniel's announcement. I guess it is the feeling that I'm not alone but also that there's another one "on our team." And like I said that made me so happy (along with the fact she had some pictures of another one of my really good friends from H-W) that I couldn't really contain it all without tears. I'm sure some of it was the fact that it continues my belief that all real lesbians are the nicest and my favorite people, but also that I'm not the only queer kid. Then The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" came on and it seemed perfect for my mood, like the one happy Cure song. And the idea of something being so good and beautiful and feeling you with enough happiness as to be comparable to our perception of heaven, well it's a good thought.
Then I read the lyrics and, yeah it's not as happy as I thought it was (I think). But the music is happy at least! I started thinking of our interactions in school and trying to remember if there were any "signs" though it is such a ludicrous statement (mainly on the basis I can't remember what happened a month ago.) And I'm sure if she was intrigued enough to check my profile she would realize she's not the only one who's "changed" and I started thinking could we ever have imagined where and who we are now back when we were 13. So I started thinking of songs that expressed that kind of idea of "wow who could've guessed" type vibe, but one that specific didn't come to mind (I'm beginning to slack with having a song at the ready for every occasion; maybe I'll just write one) though the idea that I really wanted to meet up with her (and she would be the 2nd person I know when i move to San Francisco!) made me think of the chorus of a Pulp song "let's all meet up in the year 2000. Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown" Yeah growing up is strange, but it's a beautiful thing. The song is Disco 2000 and (thinking about it the last time I may have seen her might have been around the year 2000.) So what do you say Chelsea, wanna meet up in the year 2000? I'm sure I can find a fountain down the road. Ah I really love how life turns out sometimes. It can be truly wonderful and beautiful with its surprises and paths(oh and back to the song; it's a really cool video)

I was first reminded of this song when I found an article about a new touch screen high tech instrument called a ReacTable Tactile Synth. I'm not sure how exactly it works, here's a better description and a sweet demo video as well, but it looks super cool and pretty and reminds me of the new MicroSoft Surface thing. As for the sound that it creates, let's just say I enjoy that kind of out there distortion and challenging noise and I totally would use one for my band Baby Jane, but it is definitely not for everyone. But Björk, who this sound totally meshes with, saw and heard it and started using it on her tour so its been getting some notices now. The song that was linked to the story was Bjork's Pluto, which is a really awesome song off of her Homogenic album (great album, great cover), if you love Björk, and if not...you should always try different things. As I was preparing for this post and looking up some stuff I looked up the lyrics because they are a tad indecipherable (just by listening I never understood more than "Excuse Me But I Just Have To Explode") but they are actually sort of uplifting and fit in with that new notion of starting anew and escaping pain to find a better peace (or that kind of jazz)

Thats how I feel so much of the time. Anyway I'll be going up to San Fran next week where hopefully I'll get a job, or laid, though prospects for either..I have none at the moment. Accordingly there will be new no posts (though you can always go through the archive; hours, days even of awesomeness!) I was tempted at the last moment to post an absolutely spectacular and kind of catchy song but then I thought about it and I can put it to much better use later. And plus I don't want to waste it on a Friday night dump. Anyway today's stuck in my head song of the day is Chocolate Rain. I heard about it a few weeks ago but I thought it was just some parody of Purple Rain or something, but its so much more. Created by Tay Zonday (I'm not sure if I think that name is cool or is sort of grating), whose not a traditional musician in any way, he's gotten his big break through youtube where this video has been viewed over 3 and a half million times. And this maybe the way new music explodes, though hopefully its not all this disposable and I'm not sure if that would actually be a good thing, agreeing to some extent with Elton (though not as severely). And its all just harmless fun and makes me kind of like John Mayer more for playing along. Anyway, I don't know much about him besides the fact he's 25 from Minneapolis and seems really smart (in that way where anyone who uses big words and talks a lot I'll just assume is smart when I'm too lazy to actually investigate or think about what they're expounding.) But above all that, and his kind of bull frog sounding voice, is the music and this song is horribly catchy, and if you get hooked on it you can download the song from his youtube page So here it is the original that sparked countless (or 1,080) spoofs, parodies and remixes
