Love me love me love me Say you do Let me fly away with you For my love is like the wind And wild is the wind
Give me more than one caress Satisfy this hungriness Let the wind blow through your heart For wild is the wind
You... touch me... I hear the sound of mandolins You... kiss me... With your kiss my life begins You're spring to me All things to me
Don't you know you're life itself Like a leaf clings to a tree Oh my darling, cling to me For we're creatures of the wind And wild is the wind So wild is the wind
Masdar City will cost $22bn (£11.3bn), take eight years to build and be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses.
The city will be mostly powered by solar energy and residents will move in travel pods running on magnetic tracks.
The city will make use of traditional Gulf architecture to create low-energy buildings, with natural air conditioning from wind towers.
Water will be provided through a solar-powered desalination plant, Masdar says. The city will need a quarter of the power required for a similar sized community, while its water needs will be 60% lower.
The city forms part of an ambitious plan to develop clean energy technologies.
In January, the government of Abu Dhabi announced a $15bn five-year initiative to develop clean energy technologies, calling it "the most ambitious sustainability project ever launched by a government".
As part of the plan, Abu Dhabi will become home to the world's largest hydrogen power plant.
The money is being channelled through the Masdar Initiative, a company established to develop and commercialise clean energy technologies, and Abu Dhabi hopes it will lead to international joint ventures involving much more money.
Abu Dhabi will invest $4bn of equity in the project and borrow some of the rest, Masdar said.
"We are creating an array of financial vehicles to finance the $22bn development," Masdar chief executive officer Sultan al-Jaber told Reuters news agency.
"We will monetise all carbon emission reductions... Such innovative financing has never been applied to the scale of an entire city."
Of course all of the money used to pay for this oasis in the desert will have come from oil revenues, but let's not worry about that part.
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round: And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. -Coleridge
and in a less scary part of the world with a lot of fun things converging Feeling singer Dan Gillespie revealed to us that singer Sophie Ellis Bexter is to start up a gay themed 80s club in London, inspired by David Bowie. Gillespie, spilt the beans on the plans of the wife of his bassist, Richard Jonessaying 28-year-old is in talks with the owners of the late Rebel Rebel gay night club.
80s? Sophie? Bowie? Buggers? Brits? I am totally there. And I am really all about this club just as long as they promise to play this song. For at least one straight hour. Each and Every night.

Time - He's waiting in the wings He speaks of senseless things His script is you and me, boy
Time - He flexes like a whore Falls wanking to the floor His trick is you and me, boy
Time - In Quaaludes and red wine Demanding Billy Dolls And other friends of mine Take your time
The sniper in the brain, regurgitating drain Incestuous and vain, and many other last names I look at my watch it say 9:25 and I think "Oh God I'm still alive"

You - are not a victim You - just scream with boredom You - are not evicting time
Times - Goddamn, you're looking old You'll freeze and catch a cold 'Cause you've left your coat behind Take your time Breaking up is hard, but keeping dark is hateful I had so many dreams, I had so many breakthroughs But you, my love, were kind, but love has left you dreamless The door to dreams was closed. Your park was real and greenless Perhaps you're smiling now, smiling through this darkness But all I had to give was the guilt for dreaming

"Bowie performs his swan song as Ziggy on the Midnight Special in his "1980 Floor Show" filmed in 1973"
Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies I saw boys, toys electric irons and T.V.'s My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare I had to cram so many things to store everything in there And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people I never thought I'd need so many people
A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children If the black hadn't a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that
I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don't think you knew you were in this song And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there Your face, your race, the way that you talk I kiss you, you're beautiful, I want you to walk
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes Five years, what a surprise We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot Five years, that's all we've got We've got five years, what a surprise Five years, stuck on my eyes We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot Five years, that's all we've got We've got five years, stuck on my eyes Five years, what a surprise We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot Five years, that's all we've got We've got five years, what a surprise We've got five years, stuck on my eyes We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot Five years, that's all we've got Five years Five years Five years Five years
I can’t believe I forgot it on Friday but in those last few minutes of sleep this morning I’m not sure why my mind drifted to it but I either remembered the December 21, 2012 Mayan Prophecy or that David Bowie song (sung above in his Thin White Duke glory) 5 years but no matter in what order it came, there may be less than 5 years until apocalypse or rebirth or something. It doesn’t matter much though either way; I always love a good mystery and always work better under deadline.
Here's a short "crackpot" video: (p.s. you'll probably want to turn down the volume for this)
And though that was incredibly cheesy and right wing (admittedly I can see Barack being The Anti-Christ[UPDATE: I'm glad I'm not the only one]) it did spark some more research on my own, and even though with things as vague or malleable as prophecies they can be twisted to fit any time it was still really [interesting/worrying] intriguing.
One early popular proponent of a pole shift theory was Hugh Auchincloss Brown, an electrical engineer who advanced a theory of catastrophic pole shift. Brown argued that accumulation of ice at the poles caused recurring tipping of the axis in cycles of approximately 7 millennia.
Charles Hapgood is now perhaps the best remembered early proponent, from in his books The Earth's Shifting Crust (1958) (which includes a foreword by Albert Einstein) and Path of the Pole (1970). Hapgood speculated that the ice mass at one or both poles over-accumulates which destabilizes the earth's rotational balance, causing slippage of all or much of earth's outer crust around the earth's core, which retains its axial orientation. Based on his own research, he argued that each shift took approximately five thousand years, followed by 20 to 30 thousand year periods with no polar movements. Also, in his calculations, the area of movement never covered more than 40 degrees. His examples of recent locations for the North Pole include the Yukon Territory, Hudson Bay, and in the Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Norway.
This is an example of slow pole shift motion, which displays the most minor alterations and no destruction. A more dramatic view assumes more rapid changes, with dramatic alterations of geography and localized areas of destruction due to earthquakes and tsunamis. Several recent books propose changes that take place in weeks, days, or even hours, resulting in a variety of doomsday scenarios.
Regardless of speed, the results of a shift occurring results in major climate changes for most of the earth's surface, as areas that were formerly equatorial become temperate, and areas that were temperate become either more equatorial or more arctic.
Hapgood wrote to Canadian librarian, Rand Flem-Ath, encouraging him in his pursuit of scientific evidence to back Hapgood's claim and in his expansion of the theory. Flem-Ath published the results of this work in 1995 in When the Sky Fell co-written with his wife, Rose.
Other theories which are not dependent upon polar ice masses include those involving:
* a high-velocity asteroid or comet which hits Earth at such an angle that the lithosphere moves independent of the mantle * a high-velocity asteroid or comet which hits Earth at such an angle that the entire planet shifts axis. * an unusually magnetic celestial object which passes close enough to Earth to temporarily reorient the magnetic field, which then “drags” the lithosphere about a new axis of rotation. Eventually, the sun's magnetic field again determines the Earth's, after the intruding celestial object “returns” to a location from which it cannot influence Earth. * perturbations of the topography of the core-mantle boundary, perhaps induced by differential core rotation and shift of its axial rotation vector, leading to CMB mass redistributions. * mass redistributions in the mantle from mantle avalanches or other deformations.

266 John Paul II (1978-2005) 110 De labore Solis (of the eclipse of the sun, or from the labour of the sun)
Hist.: Karol Wojtyla was born on May 18, 1920 during a solar eclipse. He also comes from behind the former Iron Curtain (the East, where the Sun rises). He might also be seen to be the fruit of the intercession of the Woman Clothed with the Sun labouring in Revelation 12 (because of his devotion to the Virgin Mary). His Funeral occurred on 8 April, 2005 when there was a solar eclipse visible in the Americas.
267 Benedict XVI (2005-) 111 Gloria olivæ
The Benedictine order traditionally said this Pope would come from their order, since a branch of the Benedictine order is called the Olivetans. St Benedict is said to have prophesied that before the end of the world, a member of his order would be Pope and would triumphantly lead the Church in its fight against evil. While the Holy Father chose the name "Benedict", this does not seem enough to fulfil the prophecy. Nor is it clear how Benedict XVI (a Bavarian) is "Glory of the Olives". Since he is said to have remarked in the Conclave after saying he would take the name Benedict that it was partly to honour Benedict XV, a pope of peace and reconciliation, perhaps Benedict XVI will be a peacemaker in the Church or in the World, and thus carry the olive branch.
And the next prophecy for Pope 112? Petrus Romanus? In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremêdus judicabit populum suum. Finis. (In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)
The song I really had in my head the most was Confessions by the Violent Femmes but I was unable to find a halfway decent video (or anything at all besides this) so I guess this is one fo those days where second place finishes in first. And second place is a good one. It's Panic in Detroit by David Bowie. It's such an awesome driving and pumping song and I love the opening line of the lyrics " He looked a lot like Che Guevara, drove a diesel van"- it sucks me in everytime
He looked a lot like Che Guevara, drove a diesel van Kept his gun in quiet seclusion, such a humble man The only survivor of the National People's Gang Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone Panic in Detroit (oh oh oh aahh, oh oh oh aahh)
He laughed at accidental sirens that broke the evening gloom The police had warned of repercussions They followed none too soon A trickle of strangers were all that were left alive Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone Panic in Detroit (oh oh oh aahh, ah ah ah aahh)
Putting on some clothes I made my way to school (oh oh oh) And I found my teacher crouching in his overalls I screamed and ran to smash my favourite slot machine (oh oh oh) And jumped the silent cars that slept at traffic lights
Having scored a trillion dollars, made a run back home Found him slumped across the table. A gun and me alone I ran to the window. Looked for a plane or two Panic in Detroit. He'd left me an autograph "Let me collect dust." I wish someone would phone Panic in Detroit Panic in Detroit Panic in Detroit
Here's a video taken from a 1976 rehearsal for the Thin White Duke tour (I really think that's my favorite persona of his.) So, enjoy Your Stuck in My Head Song of The Day- Panic in Detroit by David Bowie
Barack Obama: too good to place his hand on his heart, obviously showing his hatred of America and her Ideals*.
This is a fairly old article, written almost exactly a year ago, but it still is very relevant to today, and in fact when I first read it I thought it had been written recently. It is a piece by John McWhorther called "The Color of His Skin"
Imagine him white.
Barack Obama, that is. Amidst all the glowing talk about the possibility of his becoming America's first black president in 2008, it's an interesting thought experiment to imagine whether Mr. Obama would elicit this swooning buzz if he were white.
That is, let's imagine a white guy with all of Mr. Obama's pluses: crinkly smile, sincere concern for the little man, fine speech a couple of years ago about bringing the nation together, a certain charisma, wrote a touching autobiography. Let's call him Barrett O'Leary.
I do not think Mr. O'Leary would be touted a year-and-change into his Senate appointment as a presidential possibility. No knock on Mr. Obama intended, mind you. For all we know, he could have the genius for national statesmanship of a Disraeli. The point is that we don't know yet. Like any new senator, Mr. Obama has been quietly learning his way around the byzantine procedures of Senate lawmaking.
The key factor that galvanizes people around the idea of Obama for president is, quite simply, that he is black. Other things about him don't hurt, but that's all — they are not the deciding factor. Take away Mr. Obama's race and he's some relatively anonymous rookie. Barrett O'Leary, even if as cute and articulate as Mr. Obama, would have to wait at least another four years, and possibly six or seven, before being considered as a possible commander in chief.
What gives people a jolt in their gut about the idea of President Obama is the idea that it would be a ringing symbol that racism no longer rules our land. President Obama might be, for instance, a substitute for that national apology for slavery that some consider so urgent. Surely a nation with a black president would be one no longer hung up on race.
It is a very thoughtful article and has many of the same thoughts I've had on this subject, why middle and upper class, predominantly white people are so swept up for Barack while a lot of black people aren't as convinced. I really don't think he would have this same kind of buzz or hype as a "new hope"- rather he would basically be John Edwards, without the platform and passion.
It seems every day that we're living more and more fully in Hillary's world, and though I would be kind of upset I think I'm okay with that fact- I had a pleasant dream about it last night.
*and yes I do the same thing, with my hands clasped in front of me, but...America pisses me off sometimes and I'm a socialist and I'm not running for president.
Today your simply amazing stuck in my head song of the day is David Bowie's "Heroes." I think I was inspired by the memory of 6 years ago ordinary people doing extraordinary things, or maybe it was the Starz commercial with the Wallflowers' version. But whichever and however the song has stuck with me with the idea that whoever we are and whatever our station we can be heroes, if just for one day. And yes I know the song is about, and the lyrics speak of two forbidden lovers, and the title is ironic, but humor me.
I I will be king And you You will be queen Though nothing will Drive them away We can beat them Just for one day We can be Heroes Just for one day
And you You can be mean And I I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers And that is a fact Yes we're lovers And that is that
Though nothing Will keep us together We could steal time Just for one day We can be Heroes For ever and ever What d'you say
I I wish you could swim Like the dolphins Like dolphins can swim Though nothing Will keep us together We can beat them For ever and ever Oh we can be Heroes Just for one day
I I will be king And you You will be queen Though nothing Will drive them away We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be us Just for one day
I I can remember Standing By the wall And the guards Shout above our heads And we kissed As though nothing could fall And the shame Was on the other side Oh we can beat them For ever and ever Then we can be Heroes Just for one day
We can be Heroes We can be Heroes We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be Heroes We're nothing And nothing will help us Maybe we're lying Then you better not stay But we could be safer Just for one day
I actually like this performance and this version a lot more, but the following, more official version has an atmosphere more in keeping with the vibe of today (no smiling guitarist over the shoulder) and I'm a sucker for atmosphere:
Tomorrow we will be born again into a post September 11th world. All the promises, hopes and opportunities are still there in front of us. Let's try to do better with them this time. David Bowie- "Heroes" (mp3)

I had been thinking about my last post for awhile and the song that came to me was David Bowie's Boys Keep Swinging, one of those crypto-homo rock songs that everyone loves, but especially among the lyrics the line "When you're a boy, other boys check you out" I'm not sure exactly why, besides maybe certain other boys don't check me out. And it is also true when you're a boy "clothes always fit ya", especially girls clothes because designers seem to design only for models who have the body types of boys.Hmm he makes a convincing point for going back to being a boy. Anyway it is a tremendous song and is a really good video that caused some consternation, as all good rockers should. P.S. Bowie looks best as the brunette.
But then while I had this song in my head I was thinking about the notion of masculinity and heterosexuality and Joe Jackson's Real Men popped into mind. "Sure they're all straight, straight as a line...every now and then I wonder who the Real Men are." I know I can relate to these lyrics; my whole life I've wondered about being a "Real Man;" I probably fail: Take your mind back - I don't know when Sometime when it always seemed To be just us and them Girls that wore pink And boys that wore blue Boys that always grew up better men Than me and you
What's a man now - what's a man mean Is he rough or is he rugged Is he cultural and clean Now it's all change - it's got to change more 'Cause we think it's getting better But nobody's really sure... See the nice boys - dancing in pairs Golden earring golden tan Blow-wave in the hair Sure they're all straight - straight as a line All the gays are macho Can't you see their leather shine
You don't want to sound dumb - don't want to offend So don't call me a faggot Not unless you are a friend Then if you're tall and handsome and strong You can wear the uniform and I could play along...
Time to get scared - time to change plan Don't know how to treat a lady Don't know how to be a man Time to admit - what you call defeat 'Cause there's women running past you now And you just drag your feet
Man makes a gun - man goes to war Man can kill and man can drink And man can take a whore Kill all the blacks - kill all the reds And if there's war between the sexes Then there'll be no people left
And so it goes - go round again But now and then we wonder who the real men are
Yup, yup, yup. I first heard the Tori Amos version and so I prefer it; it also adds another level of gender subversion and you can watch it here, but the Joe Jackson version, he wrote it and I'd guess he lived it so it has that power of authenticity that can't be denied or faked. I finally found a video; here it is
Hmm... I need to go to bed,I have way too many thoughts in my head; thoughts of gender, tboughts of authenticity all things that trouble me. But as for you all: good night my loves. :)
When I woke up this morning, and for the longest time thereafter I had Veruca Salt's Seether stuck in my head and the video was so perfect for my early to mid 90's alternative music nostalgia, but then I went on Slate and they had a photographic essay tribute to Andy Warhol because today would have been his 79th birthday. I've never really "gotten" Warhol like some people and I've never liked him or the way it can be said he used certain people, but I've always dug his scene; The Factory, the Warhol Superstars,Velvet Underground, all that noise; the village in the late 60's is in my lists of place to go once I build my time machine. But I, and this site, do owe a debt to him. You see that profile picture? It isn't me (Gasp!) I'm not a blonde ;) Truthfully it's Candy Darling one of Warhol's Superstars, and sort of an inspiration to me in a weird way, incredibly gorgeous and she has the most absolutely fabulous name ever! Plus she has one of the best quotes ever in an exchange that went something like:
Interviewer: "So we're all wondering; how often do you get your period, Candy?" Candy Darling: "Every day. That's how much of a woman I am."
Ah, I love it! But that digression aside once I started looking at the slideshow for the rest of the day, and of course still now I've had David Bowie's "Andy Warhol" stuck in my head. It has a really catchy repeated guitar riff, but when I finally looked up the lyrics I wasn't sure if Bowie was criticizing Warhol; they didn't seem that positive to me (though Bowie did play Warhol in Basquiat, so I'm not sure.) Anyway the video I found on youtube I'm not sure if it is an actual release, (it seems to fit that type of vibe), or one of those fan "directed" ones, (some of the images of Bowie look like their from his Life on Mars video I don't think he was yet fully in his Ziggy phase and one face looked like a Jimmy Carter mask) but I still like it and the confusion of the images works with the song. But enjoy and Happy Birthday Mr. Warhol
