My Prerogative-A Warning Sign

Britney Spears- My Prerogative
When this song came out didn’t it just seem fierce and spunky and Woo, rebellious in a finally grown up way
Now reading the lyrics (that I know were written for Bobby Brown in the 80s but) and hearing that rebellion in her voice when she sings them well in hindsight I’m hearing alarm bells and seeing warning signs. It's like the song was written for a star who was about to ride "I do what I want" off the rails...like Britney.
This might be the most “Oooh…yeah…sigh” song in retrospect since Kurt Cobain wrote I Hate Myself and Want To Die (or the Presidents of the United States did We’re Not Going to Make It-who needs irony?)

People can take everything away from you
But they can never take away your truth
But the question is..
Can you handle mine?

They say I'm crazy
I really don't care
That's my prerogative
They say I'm nasty
But I don't give a damn
Getting boys is how I live
Some ask me questions
Why am I so real?
But they don't understand me
I really don't know the deal about my sister
Trying hard to make it right
Not long ago
Before I won this fight

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
that's my prerogative

(it's my prerogative)
It's the way that I wanna live (it's my prerogative)
You can’t tell me what to do

Don't get me wrong
I'm really not souped
Ego trips is not my thing
Fuck all these strange relationships,
It really gets me down
I see nothing wrong, spread myself around

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative
That’s my prerogative

It's the way that I wanna live (it's my prerogative)
You can’t tell me what to do

why can't I live my life
without all of the things
That people say
oh oh

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me
Why don't they just let me live?
I don't need permission, make my own decisions
That's my prerogative (they say I’m crazy)

(it's my prerogative)

Oh sweetie, now you can’t make your own decisions. Sad and you thought they called you crazy then…

With earplugs in, it’s less dangerous

Smells Like Teen Spirit as performed by ukuleles

and “The ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain” as seen on Later...With Jools Holland

How bizarre!

Dear god what would Kurt think?

Though to be fair it’s still a thousand times better (in a purely unironic way) than “this” the Hackley School Massacre

(p.s. I love the description on the youtube page
"This is the entire god-awful performance. Quite possibly the worst cover of any song ever recorded in the history of the universe. Enjoy!")
( p.p.s. why couldn’t they perform on the stage which is right behind them?)
(p.p.p.s this one is pretty awful as well but not nearly as earnest and they’re Italian so I’ll cut some slack)

Oh well. Whatever. Nevermind.

Your Stuck in my Head Song(s) of the Day

Today I couldn't settle on one song that was in my head because these three were sorta of swirling around and intermingling with each other in a strange and continuous medley. I'm not sure if the musicality they share is just in my head or is evident, but whatever. here are your stuck in my head songs of the day "Bukowski" by Modest Mouse, "Big Cheese" by Nirvana and "Beautiful Son" by Hole. ok i'll just leave it at that. kid nation is on y'know. so enjoy

Modest Mouse-Bukowski(mp3)

Nirvana- Big Cheese (mp3)

Hole- Beautiful Son (mp3)
You look good in my dress
I'll get your friends to clean the mess
You look good in my clothes
I can feel you where the doctor goes

My beautiful son
Yeah...I know

He had ribbons in his hair
And lipstick was everywhere
You look good in my dress
You look good in my dress

You're barren like me
You're barren

My beautiful son
